Veigues Tactical Gladiator

Reviewed by Michael LoCascio Bad news.. alien invaders are taking over the world again. It's all up to you to stop them.. there's never a dull moment for a video game hero. At least this time around, you have the opportunity to control Veigues Tactical Gladiator. Veigues isn't just your every day tactical gladiator either.. as the instruction manual states, he is an 'awesome fighting machine!' Alright, I must admit that I was not all that impressed after reading the instruction manual's introduction to the game. But Veigues Tactical Gladiator is much more intriguing and complex than I had originally given it credit for. It seems like a standard, horizontally-scrolling action game in which it is your mission to blast everything in sight. But NEC included a number of elements that make the game so much more than that. First of all, Veigues has three different types of weapons at his disposal: one on each arm and a gun on his chest. Managing all three of these weapons can be pretty overwhelming at first (especially since the controls aren't exactly tight), but experimenting with each of them and figuring out which ones work best in which situations can be a great deal of fun. Along with managing your weapons, you also have to be wary of the damage that Veigues is taking to each part of his body. Should one part of Veigues be destroyed, you will find yourself at a great disadvantage for the remainder of the level that you are on. For example, should the enemies succeed in annihilating Veigues' head, you will no longer be able to detect incoming enemies. This is a creative twist that helps Veigues transcend most run-of-the-mill action games. Perhaps the best part of Veigues Tactical Gladiator comes at the end of every level, when you are awarded bonus points based on how well you performed during the previous stage. You can use these bonus points to power up Veigues in variety of different ways. Managing your bonus points wisely is crucial to your success. The game starts off slow, but once you get a handle on how to control your robot you'll discover just how much fun Veigues Tactical Gladiator can really be. The game gets more and more intense and enjoyable as it goes along, and with ten tough stages to beat, you can be sure that it will last for a while. Throw in some very solid graphics, and you have an innovative game that deserves a chance.. even if you've already saved the world from aliens a million times before. Overall: 7 out of 10
