Air Zonk
Reviewed by Inkhands
Air Zonk is a very colorful game and the look of it is very
much as that of a cartoon. Not only is the look of the game
so unserious, so is the tone. In this game you play as Zonk,
who flies through the air with a lightning bolt attached to
his head shooting at a strange variety of enemies that comes
his way. The stages are set in such locations as a stadium,
the ocean, a city filled with fire hydrants that shoot out
of the ground as missiles, traffic lights floating through
the air, and parking meters dancing around in the air. All
the stages have an ususual set of enemies, but none more
creative than the city stage.
As Zonk progresses he can pick up an assortment of weapons.
Such as missiles, cards, iron teeth, and a few more. He can
also pick up a large, yellow smiley face. When he does that
a friend will join him. Depending on how you set up the game
this friend will either be controlled automatically or
manually. You can also even choose to play alone.
If while you have a friend and encounter another yellow
smiley face Zonk will become even more powerful and take on
one very strange form. Such as a dog that shoots out BOW at
his enemies or arms that have really strong weapons shooting
out of them. A few other strange forms are possible, but I
think there's only one possible one per stage.
As I said earlier at the beginning of the game you choose to
play alone or with one of the friends that can join Zonk
along the way. You can also choose the difficulty of the
game - sweet, spicy, or bitter. Those are really the same as
saying easy, normal, or hard.
Graphics - Very colorful game. All the enemies look
different and bright. Zonk and his many forms look
interesting. Zonk's friends include a cow that looks like he
had a lot air pumped into him. All the friends and enemies
are creative looking and very unique. Creative, colorful graphics.
Sound - I really didn't care much for the music that plays
during this game. The songs were all upbeat, but they did
sound kind of boring to me. Some of them tried to infuse
tension into the game, but failed, as this game really has
no tension in it.
Gameplay - I explained above how the game works. Zonk flies
and shoots at his enemies, he collects friends and powerups
along the way. This really isn't too different than any
other shooter, except for the way it looks. The challenge is
medium at best. The game is kind of short and doesn't
present too much of a challenge on any of the stages,
particulary the first four.
Replay Value - Not all that high.... this is one of those
games that you can play through once and that's about all
there is to it. I suppose if you want to beat it on all
three of the difficulty settings, then maybe it's worth
playing again, but otherwise it just becomes less original
the more times you play it. I would imagine so anyway.
Overall - Well an original looking game. A somewhat creative
playing game. Not too challenging. A little short, but it's
not a bad game to play once or twice.
