Okay, when I first saw the cover for the game, it didn't appeal to
me at all. The characters may look dorky in the Anime art, but in
reality they're anything but that. This is one of the greatest
RPGs ever, and it is a must-have.
Graphics 9.4 out of 10
The graphics are not eye-popping like Donkey Kong Country 2
or 3, but it has the best non computer generated graphics I've
ever seen on the Super NES. The graphics are a lot like Secret of
Mana's, but the graphics are a big step up in quality. It has higher
resolution than Secret of Mana (or so it appears to be), and the
backgrounds look even better than Final Fantasy 3's! The
characters and enemies look fantastic, but not quite as good as
Final Fantasy 3's characters and monsters. A lot of the spells,
look incredible for the Super NES, especially the more powerful ones.
Music and Sound 9.9 out of 10
WOW! The music was done VERY well in this game. The only
Super NES games that I think have higher quality music are the
Donkey Kong Country series. But still, it was composed better
than the Donkey Kong Country games! The music perfectly fits
what is going on, and the music gives you a lot of feelings for the
characters. You will LOVE the songs like Underwater Palace, the
music in the Reptite's Castle, Schala, Frog's Theme, and lots of
others! The only video game (and I mean ANY video game) that
beats this in the music category in my opinion is Final Fantasy 3.
Game Challenge 9 out of 10
The first part of the game is easy, but the Final Boss is by FAR
the hardest boss in the game (unlike so many RPGs). Other bosses
can be difficult as well, such as Giga Gaia, and the Golems (I think
that's what they're called). The enemies take longer to kill than
the recent Final Fantasies, and it takes MUCH more strategy,
though usually it isn't difficult to figure out a way to really hurt
the enemy. Also, the weapons and armor are harder to afford
than in the Final Fantasy Series (except Final Fantasy 1), and
you don't get money very fast. This is almost as hard as
Final Fantasy 2, but it's harder than Final Fantasy 3.
Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10
This is definitely the best point of the game. The story is excellent
(especially in 10,000 B.C), and the character development is
probably the 3rd best out of any RPG (After Xenogears and
Final Fantasy 3). In this game, you get to travel through time
to solve the big problems back in those times to save the future
(just like Back to the Future, but with worse problems). You get
6 required characters, including 1 optional character. One really
cool thing about this is the multiple endings. There are around
17 of them, I believe! Yeah, Star Ocean: The Second Story has
over 80 endings, but this was released on a Super NES cartridge!
The battle system is fairly unique since you can do combos (like
Marle's Ice and Crono's sword put together for a very powerful
attack), and are vital when it comes to boss battles, or else it
may take a looong time(regular attacks aren't as effective in
this game as in the Final Fantasies)
You can get frustrated by some bosses because they can attack
fast and do a lot damage. If your levels are in the 50s or lower,
the Final Boss can be extremely difficult (especially the final form).
I got to the Final Boss with an average level of 48, and I couldn't
even beat the 2nd form (out of 3) of the final boss (the lasers of
doom did 500-900 damage, while your max HP is 999)! A few times,
you might not know where to go, if you don't listen to what's going on.
Replayability 9 out of 10
This game has very high replay value, because of the awesome
story, great plot twists, and it around 17 different endings! It's
a lot like those one type of "Goosebumps" books where you choose
what to do, and it effects the ending (awesome!) and even better,
if you get the best ending (you have to do every side quest), a New
Game+ option will be there! In a new game+, you can start the game
with the characters exact status from another file (like you start
out with a level 99 Crono!.
Game Value 10 out of 10
This game is obviously worth the price. You just got to love this game.
