WWF Rage in the Cage
Reviewed by Dale Kulas
Graphics: 8: The graphics look exactly as they do in SNES
and Geneseis versions of WWF Royal Rumble and WWF RAW, if
you don't remember those games the wrestlers and the ring
and the crowd all were done well. Sculptured Software
(Iguana) made us of the Sega CD compatibilities and had FMV
footage of each of the 20 wrestlers finishing moves, which
was a neat bonus.
Sound: 8: Again, very similar to RAW and Royal Rumble. There
was the entrance music for all 20 wrestlers in the game. All
the sound effects were done nicely, just like in RAW and
Rumble, with all the "ugh" and choking noises the wrestlers make.
Gameplay: 9: There were several gameplay modes from single,
world championship, tag team, tag team championship, Royal
Rumble, and the Cage mode. Gameplay was the same as RAW and
Rumble with the Grapple meters, which meant lots of button
smashing to perform moves. Back at the time of when Rage in
the Cage was released (1994) most wrestling games were use to
having somewhere around 10 or 12 wrestlers to choose from,
however with lots of storage memory on the Sega CD, Rage in
the Cage featured a whopping 20 wrestlers: "Macho Man" Randy
Savage, Lex Luger, The Big Boss Man, Kamala, Mr. Perfect,
Bam Bam Bigelow, Bret "Hitman" Hart, Shawn Michaels, Razor
Ramon, Crush, "The Model" Rick Martel, Tatanka, Yokozuna,
The Undertaker, "Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase, Irwin R.
Shyster (IRS), and 4 other guys.
Replay Value: 8: There was a 2-player mode for all modes of
gameplay, except world championship. The FMV's of the
wrestler's finishing moves were a nice little bonus as well.
This was also the only WWF game on 16-bit format to feature
a cage mode of gameplay. 20 wrestlers to choose from weren't
that bad either.
Overall: 8: The game was a great package all together. This
was the only wrestling game on the Sega CD also. All the
gameplay modes are lots of fun, especially Royal Rumble and
Cage mode. It's funny that this game actually featured more
WWF wrestlers than Warzone did for N64 and PSX (Rage in the
Cage had 20, and Warzone had 18, not including the hidden
fake wrestlers (Remember Turok, Trainer, Sue, and
Rattlesnake?)). If you happen to be one of those very few
people that actually still play there Sega CD, then make
sure to pick up this great game.
