NBA Jam
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
The Sega CD version of NBA Jam is much like its Genesis and
SNES counter part it is still fun, it still has great
players it just has an updated roster and stats. The sounds
would have to be the biggest change, with more saying from
the announcer and some of the arcade one's that never made it home.
Visuals 8. 0/10
The graphics are quite similar to the other home versions.
The same two or 3 faces are being shared with each
character, so only the stats tell you it's a different
player. The same basketball court the only difference is the
color of the Paint. The audience does look a little more
alive, with all this basket ball action they better be. The
player profile faces do look a little better than they did
during the original home version, if this had been implied
to the game it would have been better.
Audio 9. 0/10
The audio department improved highly over any other NBA Jam
version that was out back then. You have new quotes from the
announcer a louder audience and even the music sounds better
that play during the game. The opening theme is great and it
is one that I remember even now, it was way better than the
already great other home versions. The sound FX also took a
step in the right directions, dunks sound more rim rocking
and you can even hear the net being burned when your on fire.
Game Play 8. 5/10
This game was for 1 to 4 players. You had 28 teams this
time, the regular 28 at the time (Minus the Toronto Raptors
and Vancouver Grizzlies since they weren't teams when this
game was made) and another team. The rosters have been
updated which is a very good thing some updates include,
Penny Hardaway, Sprewell and Webber on the Warriors and
Barkley playing for the Suns. The controls are the same as
the other NBA Jams with the 3 button being turbo shoot and
pass. You still have to play through all the teams to get
the championship, a real season like other basketball sims
would have been nice. You still get the monster dunks found
in the other version, some of the cooler ones like the
helicopter and the double 720 with the ball on fire. The
only other problem since this being a CD it comes with the
price of long loading times, this games loading times are
longer than usual Sega CD games for some reason, but it
really doesn't hamper the game play too much. The difficulty
is intermediate and you get password saves.
Overall 9 out of 10
An slightly improved and cleaned up original NBA Jam. Though
it is better than any other home version that was out, my
question was why did it take so long for this game to come
out. If this were released with the other Jam's this was the
clear cut winner. Then if it did you wouldn't have the
updated rosters either so it might have been a good thing.
If you loved NBA Jam in the arcade's and you really need Jam
for Sega CD you can't go wrong with NBA Jam CD.
