Virtua Racing Deluxe
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Virtua Racing Deluxe was way better than the Genesis version
of Virtua Racing. This game was very close to the arcade
version of Virtua Racing minus just a few features but some
have been added to make this a better overall game. Racing
fans might not get al the features they expect from a racing
sim, but there is some things here that will kepp you
interested.
Visuals 10/10
Some outstanding graphics play throughout, this game. The
cars hear are quite a bit sleeker than they were on the
Genesis version. There are now 3 cars instead of the 1 you
had on the Genesis version. The cars are Formula 1, The
stock car and the prototype. Granted you get a better
selection in any other Genesis racing game but at the time
there weren't and racing games that looked as good as this.
Even the crashes look more realistic, instead of the few
flips and turns they did on the Genesis version this time
you see smoke coming from the cars. The backgrounds are
great too; you get 5 tracks this time instead of just 3. You
also get the same views that you did from original Virtua Racing.
Audio 8. 0/10
The Genesis version gave you snippets of a song every time
you passed a checkpoint. The songs were good but hearing the
whole song would have made it better. This has been answered
you get the full song when you drive on this version plus a
few more songs. The announcer doesn't say too much besides
time bonus, and final lap. The sound department is the
weakest part of the game but graphics as great as these
surely make up for it.
Game Play 9. 5/10
This game was for 1 or 2 players. The control speed and
response of the cars have stepped up quite a bit from the
Genesis version. The controls were pretty precise back then
but even more so here. 3 types of cars to chose from really
add to the replay value and they have different abilities
and speeds. The prototype is the fastest and when you play
in Sand Park or big forest that knows how fast it can go?
Since it seems the speedometer never stop and you really
can't reach its top speed. Unfortunately the control is
horrid and you can crash pretty easily. Stock car or Formula
1 are best suited for control and not their speed. You also
have the different camera views as well, depending on your
overall driving skill you can see which one is suited for
you. The are behind the wheel, behind the car, overhead, and
really high overhead. I would suggest the really high one
for racing beginners because you can see a lot of track that
way, racing pros might want to take it behind the wheel or
behind the car to test their skills. The difficulty is
adjustable and their isn't save or password feature.
Overall 9 out of 10
An immensely fun and challenging game. Though Genesis games
featured more tracks cars, and some even had create your own
car feature, nothing out there at the time could compare to
these graphics. Some would say they would rather have the
more options and tracks over the graphics it all depends on
the person. The replay value is still pretty low compared to
the usual racing game, but 10 times higher than the Genesis
version. If you are looking for a good racing game for 32X
look no farther than Virtua Racing.
