Reviewed by Jeremy Peeples Sega Rally Championship was released in early 1996 for the Sega Saturn as a port of the arcade classic of the same name. Many game magazines at the time were worried about how the game would turn out because of the Saturn's lack of 3-D power. Thankfully, all worried subsided when this gem of a game was released. Graphics-10/10- Simply marvelous, the cars are solid and look a lot like their real-life and arcade counterparts. The framerate is solid and there are small graphical touches that shine through and grab your attention (the birds flying away comes to mind.) The graphics are one the best qualites of the game and are a testament to the power of the Saturn. Sound-8/10- The announcer's voice is crystal clear as are the car's engine noises and tire squeaks, the music is good, but is relatively bland, it no big deal though, who plays a racing game for music anyway? Control-10/10- Perfect, the controls take a little getting used to, but are a breeze after you learn them, like most Sega-developed racing games, the control is responsive and easy to learn, the only hard part is getting used to the dirt tracks that cause you to put more effort into controlling the car. Gameplay-9/10- Excellent, the game is very realistic for an arcade port and it features the most realistic handling of rally cars that I've ever seen. The game has a decent amount of huge tracks that take quite a bit of practice to master. Presentation-9/10- The presentation is arcade-perfect, the menus are exact as are the car selection screens. If you loved the arcade version's presentation, you won't be disappointed. Overall-9/10- This game has many excellent qualities, among them the great graphics that showed the Saturns' 3-D power, the realistic sound effects, and the perfect control. All of these qualities combine to make a racing experience that won't soon be forgotten. Rent or Buy?-Buy- This game is a classic that deserves to be purchased by all Saturn owners, it is also relatively rare and may be hard to track down, if you find a copy of it buy it immediately, beleive me, you won't be disappointed.
