NiGHTS Into Dreams
Reviewed by Jeremy Peeples
Nights: Into Dreams was released during September of 1996. It
was developed by Sonic Team (developers of the legendary
Sonic the Hedgehog games on the Sega Genesis.) It was
released at around the same time as Mario 64 and Crash
Bandicoot, this caused them to battle it out for the title
of 'The Best Selling Game of the Holiday Season' or something
like that.
This game was developed by the legendary Sonic Team was
played on a 2. 5-D playing field (this meant that while the
game was made of 3-D objects it was played in 2-D.)
Graphics-10/10- This game has vibrant colors, smooth
animation, and crisp graphics, it also features some of the
most bizarre bosses ever in a domestically released game.
Words can't really describe the graphics though, they are
among the best the Saturn has seen and are still very
impressive today. The game's characters all move with some
of the most fluid animation ever seen in a video game, the
bosses all have unique animations that are done perfectly,
as are all of Nights' intricate maneuvers. All of the game's
stages are stunningly beautiful with vibrant colors popping
out all over the place, the skies in the levels look amazing
and really enhance the game's mood.
Pros- Every character has fluid animation. Some of the most
creative character designs ever.
Cons- None.
Sound-10/10- The sound in this game is some of the best I've
ever heard in a video game. The music has a very
fantasy-esque quality to it that fits the game's theme
perfectly. The sound effects are amazing, they all sound
like they should, none of them sound out of place.
Pros- Music fits the game's setting. Sound effects are spot-on.
Cons- None.
Story-6/10- Two kids (Claris and Elliot) have been having
nightmares, they then summon Nights (the main character) to
help them defeat the enemies in their dreams.
Overall, a very disappointing story. considering the track
record of Sonic Team. Thankfully, the game's story isn't too
important, it serves it's purpose well though.
Control-10/10- Absolutely perfect, even without the 3-D
Control Pad this game controls flawlessly, it will not take
you more than one try to do most of the moves in the game
because the Directional Pad is so responsive.
Pros- Responsive D-Pad makes moves a breeze.
Cons- None.
Challenge-3/10- This is one of the easiest games in history.
None of the bosses pose much of a threat except for the
final one. Enemies during the levels are scarce. This is one
of the few games where a low difficulty level actually helps
the game, this game was meant to be enjoyed without any
hesitation or worry that you won't succeed. A higher
difficulty level could have harmed this game.
Replay Value-10/10- This game may not be challenging, but it
sure does offer up a lot of replay value. You are graded
based on your performance in a level, you can always try to
beat your top score and set your goals higher. You can also
mess around with the game's A-Life feature, it allows you to
raise your own creature in the game. There's so much to do
in this game, I doubt you'll ever get bored.
Overall-9/10- For the most part this game is perfect, the
story is the only thing that drags the score down a point.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best and most original
games in history.
Rent or Buy?-Buy- Seeing as how not too many places even
rent Saturn games (import stores are the only places that
I've seen) and the fact that this game can probably be found
for under $10 (it's $6 at Funcoland) there really isn't any
good reason not to buy the game.
