Reviewed by Jeremy Peeples Daytona USA was released for the Sega Saturn in May of 1995 as a launch title. Many wondered how this port would fare when compared to its arcade counterpart. Well, it may not have been a perfect port, but it was enough of one to get the job done. Graphics-7/10- For the most part, they are good, the pop-up is atrocious though and the car models are very blocky, the backgrounds, however, are very well-done, the detail in them is great and some are even interactive. Overall, the graphics are good, when compared to the arcade game. Sound-10/10- The music is a controversial subject with this game, seemingly you either love it or you hate it, I personally love it, it helps to get your blood pumping, the sound effects are loud and crystal clear. There are some nice, small sound touches, like the announcer saying your initials out loud if you have a top score. Control-10/10 Perfect, everything is easy to do, from drifting between cars to powersliding, basically, the control is never sluggish. One of the bet features in the game in my opinion. Gameplay-8/10- You get the usual Arcade Mode, as well as the Saturn mode, which is basically the arcade mode sans checkpoints, there is also a Time Attack Mode, you get 3 tracks to race on and many cars, a lot of the good ones are secret, like the horse. Presentation-10/10- Arcade perfect, not a thing was changed to the game's presentation, I personally like it that way, every menu is cut and dry and serves its purpose. Replay Value-8/10- Three tracks may not sound like a lot, but there are a ton of secret cars to race as too, trying get first place with all of the cars is quite a challenge. If you are starved for replay in the game, the tracks can be reversed. The amount of depth in this game is surprising. Overall-9/10- The graphics may not be perfect, but the gameplay is spot-on, the sound is good and gets you in the mood to play the game, and the controls are perfect. Overall, one of the best racers on the Saturn. Buy or Rent?-Buy- This game is a classic and is worth any price, if you can find it for under $15, buy it without hesitation, it's a great game to add to any gamer's library.
