Bug!
Reviewed by Jeremy Peeples
Bug! was released in July of 1995 for the Sega Saturn. It is
basically a 2-D platformer with 1 huge difference; you can
move in 4 different directions; up, down, left, and right.
This may not sound like much now, but in 1995, it was
revolutionary. This game stars a bug actor named Bug (how
original, I hope Sega didn't pay the marketing genius who
came up with that name too much.) Your main goal in all of
the levels is to get through each level (a. k. a. movie set),
beat the boss, and advance to the next stage.
Graphics-10/10- The character design is excellent (most
characters are memorable, the Lave-level boss comes to
mind), for the most part, everything has a nice, smooth look
to it, there is some pixellation, but it's not too major and
never detracts from the fun of the game.
Pros- Excellent character design. Great level design. Sharp graphics.
Cons- None.
Sound-9/10- The music is kind of bland, but the sound
effects are excellent, every one of them matches their
actions perfectly, some even add comic relief (getting
squashed comes to mind), the voices are great too, each on
of them fits their character.
Pros- Excellent sound effects that truly add to the game's atmosphere.
Cons- The music is bland.
Gameplay-9/10- Just like every other 2-D platformer, that is
until you walk into a different plane, this feature adds a
lot of historical value to the game, this series was the
only one to really use this platforming method, it's a real
shame too.
Pros- Innovative style of gameplay.
Cons- None.
Control-10/10- Wonderful, the game features a simple,
old-school control scheme that fits this type of game
perfectly; you can kill enemies by shooting them with Bug
Juice or by jumping on their heads, these actions are done
effortlessly through the super-responsive controls. You can
configure the controls to your liking.
Replay Value-9/10- This game has a fair of replay value,
it's not bogged down with bells & whistles, if nothing else
gets you motivated to replay it, then replay it for
historical value.
Presentation-10/10- Everything fits the game's thems
perfectly, from the Hollywood clapboard (for the movie
theme), to the oozing title screen (for the bug theme),
everything looks like it belongs.
Overall-10/10- This game is a classic, it features one of
the most innovative game engines ever, the great graphics,
sound and control are the icing on the cake that help to
make this game an unforgettable gaming experience.
