Dynamite Headdy was released in 1994 for the Sega Game Gear.
It was developed by Treasure (of Gunstar Heroes and Guardian
Heroes fame.) This particular version of the game is a port
of the Genesis game of the same name. This game has many
unique details that have yet to be duplicated on any console
(such as the brilliant use of the backdrops.) This game is
considered by many to be the crown jewel for the Sega
Genesis due to it's incredible graphics and amazing gameplay
as well as its bizzare bosses.
Now then, without further ado, let's get on to the review.
Graphics-10/10- The graphics in this game are simply
stunning, they really show what the Game Gear can do. Among
the graphical high-points are the gorgeous backrounds that
feature numerous layers of paralax, the unique (and
sometimes bizarre) character design, and the brilliant use
of scaling that is used prevelantly throughout the game.
Sound-7/10- This is the game's worst quality, and it's
excellent (considering the limitations of the platform), the
music is relatively clear and fits each level or boss
perfectly, the sound effects are great too, thay all fits
their actions perfectly. The only downside is that there are
no catchy songs.
Controls-10/10- Absolutely perfect, every maneuver in the
game is easily and flawlessly executed every time it is
attempted, the controls are very responsive and are never
problematic in any way.
Gameplay-10/10- This game features many unique traits that I
have yet to see in any other game, this game features some
of the best boss designs ever (the marionette boss, and the
final boss come to mind as does the cat boss in the first
Replay Value-10/10-This game is not easy and requres you to
memorize the paterns of a boss perfectly in order to
continue, it is a joy to play through and is worth another
play through just to relive the graphical highlights again.
Buy or Rent?-Buy- Definilely buy this game as it is quite
rare and is a gaming experience that you will never forget,
it is definitely worh your time and money.
Overall: 10 / 10
