Faery Tale Adventure
Reviewed by Dyson Turner
Faery tale adventure in my opinion was a very good game. Not
as good as the Phantasy Star series or a lot of other good
Genesis RPG's it still provided hours of challenge and
exploring of the large land called Helm. You get to do some
very fun things in this game like ride a turtle, and a
golden goose, which is able to fly. Once you get that golden
goose this game gets mega fun, and traveling from place to
place is a snap. This is a game that I still play even to
this day just for the adventure and nostalgia of playing it
again, its worth in my opinion.
Story 9.5/10
Once there was land called Holm. There are 3 brothers who
live in a town, they all wanted to follow in their father's
footsteps and be a Great War hero. One day a guy called the
Necromancer stole a talisman that protected the town from
evil demons, the talisman was myth to have great power. The
brother's father went to war to find this Necromancer and
was fatally wounded by him. His dying wish was for his son's
to seek revenge. The brother's are:
Julian: The oldest and bravest. Because he had more
experience in the world than his two younger brothers he was
the ideal choice of the town to go find their missing father.
Peter: The middle brother, as usual the luckiest of the 3.
Though not as Strong as Julian but I guess he is probably
considered the bad brother from being a middle child and he
got out of trouble a lot which added to his luck.
Kevin: The youngest of the 3 brothers. Being young his
parents probably showered him with a lot of attention, and
since he had no little brothers to pick on he chose animals
and was cute so he was nice to people. This is what I
gathered from each character.
As you started the adventure you should go to the Mayor he
will give you good advice where to go next. Even though you
may not know what this place is if you have an instruction
manual or a map you should have no problem finding
everything. The story is pretty good for an Action game I
liked it.
Graphics 8.0/10
The usual 3/4 over head view was used here, all three
brothers did look different from one another, and they were
all distinguishable from their surroundings. The enemies
were done well like the skeletons, and wraiths. The
background was nice too, like in the forest or graveyards
and towns. The size of the characters was nice though the
colors were a little plainer than I would have liked them to
be the, though it was still good, and pretty good for that
matter of a RPG type game. Over all looks were pretty good.
Some of the enemies looked a little goofy, and their weren't
any bosses really, all the weaponry you got looked pretty
good, and it was distinguishable from another type, so was
the items you would find lying about.
Sound 9.0/10
The music in the beginning of the game when they showed the
story was mega loud, and it reminded me of the old NES
Midi's that were loud like this. Though loud it was good so
That's a start, you're really have to appreciate it though
it stays the same throughout the game. Well actually there
is 3 separate themes, one for morning and mid day one, for
early morning and evening, and one for the witching hour,
A.K.A. midnight. The sound FX sounded pretty good as well,
like the slashing of your sword the sound of bow and arrows
cutting the air and enemies dying.
Game Play
This game is only for 1 player. As your journey starts to
find the necromancer, you will be using the oldest brother
Julian, thus he being the oldest and bravest he should start
the quest. This game does have typical RPG elements like GP
and experience, but it isn't called exp. Here it is called
bravery. Bravery points are rewarded every time you defeat a
foe, when you accumulate a high number of bravery points you
are practically invincible. The next type of stat you have
is Luck. If you have high number of Luck points a Fairy will
come and save your life. When a fairy comes you use up 5
luck points and start at the place you just saved your game.
The next type is kind points, kind points grants you the
ability to talk to animals like the Sea Turtle, or wizards
who are often found along the road. With a low number of
kind points many folks won't talk to you. You gain kind
points by giving people money like beggars. You lose kind
points by killing beggars wizards or ranchers. Ranchers are
pretty much like wise men, and they give information for
free, Wise Men also give even better information than
ranchers their information is also free, it is wise to give
the money after receiving the information to raise your kind
points though this is not needed. Lastly there are beggars,
they beg for alms, give them GP usually 2 and they will give
you info, which is also good and this raises your kind
points. You can also give town people GP's too but they will
just say thank you and give you no new info.
At first it will seem very hard to gain Bravery points and
many enemies will be killing you. Don't get discouraged,
once you beat a skeleton for a sword, I always wanted to
know why skeletons In every video game often carried swords.
Were they born with them, did they walk into a weapon shop
and steal one? Anyway once you get the sword there is a low
chance of you losing battle since it is next to the best
weapon in the game. One thing you should never forget is to
save, you don't have to necessarily write down the password
but it would be wise, to do it since if you dye you can go
to the load screen and press start and start from the last
point you saved from. This almost guarantees you to not run
out of luck points too soon. You don't get magic in the game
which was a huge mistake, unless you think the magic wand is
magic. You do get cool items but they don't substitute for
magic. You get a bird eye, which gives you a nice view of
the map. You get a Blue Stone which can teleport you to
certain areas in Holm, you get a red stone, these are best
used at night because they add a red artificial sunlight so
you can see better.
There is also something else very unique about this game,
you have to constantly feed and rest your character. Unlike
other RPG's where resting at the inn gives you HP and MP
back, you rest here because you are tired. Don't try to be
funny and let your character go a day or so with out food or
sleep you will pass out, and wake up the next day without
sleep. So when you set out on each different task remember
to bring food like apples with the character will
automatically eat these whenever he is hungry it won't give
you any extra HP but it will save you from falling out. Most
towns or small huts you visit don't always have food for you
to eat but they usually have a loft of hay for you to sleep
on for free, so these are advisable but if you don't have
any food you will be real hungry when you wake up. You only
able to sleep when your tired not any time you feel like
making this guy hit the hay.
If you have this game with the instruction manual which I
highly advise you some how get because it gives you a mini
walkthrough so you will know every where to go. Without it
you will be lost very quickly, you can follow the road it
sometimes leads to important places but a lot of time it
might lead you to one of those shops. The difficulty is hard
it will take at least 20-30 hours with an instruction manual
to beat without one who knows, unless you have a sixth sense
and a lot of bird's eyes. There is a long and involved
password system, not the kind you crack easily.
Overall 9.0/10
I highly enjoyed this here game, because of the sheer fun of
it and the challenge. Though some mazes may be very long and
hard to figure out but its worth it to reach the other side
or get the item you need. If you are smart or an expert RPG
player this game will go by in a breeze maybe a couple of
weeks before you finally are done wit hit. Even after you
beat it there are a quite a few small task which aren't
mandatory you might want to check out, that is of course you
want to, their isn't anybody forcing you to do it. Well when
you lose both Peter and Julian you might as well kiss the
game goodbye because only an expert can beat it with Kevin,
because he isn't brave at all from the start or lucky for
that matter. Well anyway if you like good long and involved
games, dust off your gen and get this game.
