Earthworm Jim 2
Reviewed by Jeremy Peeples
Earthworm Jim 2 was released for the Sega Genesis in the
middle of 1995 by Shiny Entertainment. Another version of
the game was also made for the Super Nintendo and Sega
Saturn.
Graphics-10/10- Just like the original, the characters are
of a good stature, they all have an original look and have
excellent animation. The animation must be seen to be
believed, it's some of the smoothest ever seen in a video
game in my opinion. Nice grahical touches like flying
grizzle coming off the grill in the grill sub-level round
out rhe excellent graphics.
Pros- Super-smooth animation and nice graphical touches help
make the graphics one of the game's best features.
Cons- None
Sound-8/10- Much like the original, the music is great, ot
fits the stages perfectly, it's not as good as the original,
but it's still good. The sound effects are excellent, each
one is crystal clear and fits in with the on-screen action
perfectly.
Pros- The music is great, as are the sound effects.
Cons- The music isn't as good as the original.
Gameplay-8/10- Almost identical to the first game, that's
not a bad thing though, many of the endearing qualities of
the original are retained and most of them improved upon.
It's too bad they didn't add much in the way of new moves,
but they did add a lot of variety to the levels (for
example, the grill level) so it balances out nicely.
Pros- Everything you loved from the original has been retained.
Cons- Unfortunately, not much has been added.
Control-9/10- Just like the original, perfect in almost
every way imaginable, the only problem being that of
swinging from one area to the next, it's a little choppy in
that respect, but it's perfect in every other.
Pros- It's very responsive in most areas.
Cons- Except the swinging areas.
Presentation-8/10- Excellent, everything is vibrant and
alive, from the title screen to teh death scenes, it's all
great, it's too much like the original though.
Replay Value-5/10- There's nothing left to accomplish after
you've beaten it, the only thing you really could do is try
to beat you old score. It's the game's fatal flaw.
Overall-8/10- The graphics are superb, as is the sound, the
control is, for the most part, perfect. If you liked the
original, buy this game, you won't regret it.
For Nomad Owners- The game works great, the great graphics,
sound and controls are all retained perfectly. Overall,
another excellent game for Nomad owners.
Rent or Buy?-Buy- Not many places rent Sega Genesis games
anymore, but this game shouldn't cost more than $15, it's a
great game at any price and deserves to be played at least
once by all gamers.
