Ultimate Fighting Championship

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was released on the
Sega Dreamcast in August of 2000, it was developed by Anchor
(team members have worked on huge hits like Tekken and Soul
Blade) and was distributed by Crave Entertainment. It is
based on the pit-fighting Pay-Per-Views of the same name,
the object is to beat your opponent until he is knocked out
or submits to a submission hold in a steel cage called the
Octagon. This is the first game to have a UFC license. It
also features over 20 real-life UFC fighters.
Graphics-10/10- The graphics are brilliant; the soft-skinned
characters in this game are the best I've ever seen. The
animation is also superb, every move looks just like the
real thing. Another notable graphical feature is the
character intros, each one of them is great, the terrific
use of lighting effects adds a lot to the atmosphere, as
does the little touches (like the Octagon being closed, the
cameramen following you to the Octagon, or the fans carrying
personalized signs.)
Pros- The best graphics ever for a fighting game.
Cons- Some very minor collision detection problems.
Sound-9/10- The sound in this game is amazing, the pre-match
nitrous by Bruce Buffer (Michael Buffer's brother) are clear
and even feature lip-synching. The sound effects are great
as well, you can practically feel each punch and every bone break.
Pros- Very realistic sound effects, crystal clear voices.
Cons- The menu music is kinda corny.
Gameplay-10/10- You can pick from many modes; here's a brief
description of each: Career Mode; you make and train a
fighter to win the gold. UFC mode is a single elimination
tournament for the silver belt. Champion Road mode is you
defending your silver belt against 12 opponents. Exhibition
mode is you against an opponent, nothing is on the line.
Training mode allows you to train your fighter by learning
the basics of the game, then moving on to more advanced techniques.
Pros- Great game engine, lots of features.
Cons- Career mode is limiting.
Control-10/10- The control scheme is just like Tekken, X
controls your left arm, Y controls your right, A controls
your left leg, B controls your right, takedowns are done by
pressing X + Y, the same goes for basic counters. This layout
works well for UFC fights, it allows the fight to swing back
and forth, the game has very balanced fights because of this.
Pros- Super responsive controls, balanced fighting engine.
Cons- None
Replay Value-8/10- This is a game that you'll never tire of,
it's an easy game to pick up and play (you can learn the
basics after a day of play), but it takes a lifetime to
master the little touches (like countering counters.)
Pros- Tons to do, there are lots of secrets.
Cons- May get boring after a long play session.
Presentation-10/10- Everything looks and feels like a real
UFC fight, from the tale of the tape in the intros, to the
Octagon, everything is perfect.
Pros- Everything looks like it should, it help capture the UFC feel.
Cons- Menus are a bit plain, most notably the in-game move list.
Overall-10/10- This is one of the best game yet on the
Dreamcast, it combines superb graphics, great sound, and
perfect control to make a game that any UFC fan (or any kind
of fighting game fan for that matter) will enjoy.
