Toy Commander
Reviewed by Nathan Tsui
Toy Commander is an interesting game with an interesting concept.
You take the role of a young boy (who you never see in the game) who
controls his toys to put down a rebellion of the past-generation toys.
TC boasts 50 missions (like racing, strategic, battle, boss, etcÉ)
which range from pathetically easy to
scream-at-the-TV-throw-your-controller-across-the-room hard.
GRAPHICS: 7
So the visuals are better than other consoles, yet I feel
the graphics could have been sharper and more detailed,
especially when you compare this game to the likes of Sonic
Adventure. I just don't think Toy Commander used as much of
the Dreamcast's power as it should have. The most glaring
weakness is in Toy Commander's multi-player mode. There are
times when even three players are fighting the game runs
down to an awful **shudder** 15 frames per second. While
that might be acceptable on OTHER systems, this is
Dreamcast! I guess I've been spoiled with 60 fps in Sonic.
CONTROL: 4
This is Toy Commander's low point. The controls may be fine
for the earlier missions and multi-player mode, but they are
way too loose when trying to beat the time limits on the
later missions. The controls are especially frustrating when
trying to drive up ramps with widths the same as that of
your vehicle. How many times does a guy have to fall off a
ramp and redo half the mission?! Enough to drive an
impatient guy like me insane.
SOUND: 8
The sound is pretty good. All the FX, from machine guns to
explosions suits the action fine. The background music is
quiet and catchy, although I would have enjoyed louder,
heavier tracks more.
REPLAY VALUE: 7
It's required that you beat time limits on all the missions
to right the bosses. While this might supposedly add replay
value, it can get downright frustrating and totally un-fun.
The multi-player mode is great, but the graphics loss is
enough to make me cry, although it is fun enough to convince
me into buying the game. Multi-player is a lot like StarFox
64, only with better graphics (ÉduhÉ), arenas, and more
options and modes.
OVERALL: 6 out of 10
It's only an OK game, and you should seriously think over
your decision if you have decided to buy it. Give it a rent
first. If you want missions and shooting, hold out for Tomb
Raider 4 on Dreamcast. If you want multi-player, wait for
ChuChu Rocket. If you've got plenty of money, then who am I
to tell you what to buy?
