Marvel vs. Capcom 2 New Age of Heroes
Reviewed by Clement Chan Zhi Li
That's what Capcom is ever popular with, creating awesome
fighting games like the Street Fighter series, Resident
Evil: Code Veronica, Marvel vs Capcom, other versus series
and the wonderful game of all, Marvel vs Capcom 2. This game
is totally different than before and supports only up to two
player for full enjoyment.
Graphics - 10
Graphics don't really look cool on almost all fighting games
because they're in 2D (some games, although in 3D look
horrifying and surprisingly slow). Although Marvel vs Capcom
2 is in 2D, look at the 3D backgrounds, most of them change
accordingly in every levels and look very sharp and clear.
All characters are created in perfect graphics, blindingly
fast characters' movements, the lighting effects and other
things that make the pictures nice. The animations are not
to be missed out and three words to describe them: very,
very fast.
Music - 8
The music in this game is one sad point that I have to point
out. Every stage has almost the same music going on in an
irritatingly jazz music that is more likely to be in a
casino or gambling areas. You may argue that background
music after all, is not an important factor in fighting
games. But in this super game, why leave out the music?
Every aspect is amazing and great except music.
I guess the sound effects really made this up. Characters
will shout in their own respective voices (notice that in
the credits, it says 'Voice Actor - Secret'?). Blasts, the
popular fire-balls 'Hadoken', webs, ships, monsters, zombies
and all sort of things with their 'mini-voices' are just
nice, including the cute Tron Bonne shouts.
Gameplay - 10
I guess that you should have known that this game consists
of 56 characters, including 24 characters and 32 secret. If
you bought the import game, there is one good and bad thing.
Good thing: you can use the D-points collected by playing
all sorts of modes, Arcade, Versus or even Training!
N-points are gotten by playing through the Japanese network
(cool!) and you will have to plug in your memory card to the
Marvel vs Capcom 2 arcade machines to get V-points. Bad
thing: All this applies only if you live in Japan.
Buy a US version and it's much better instead of making the
trouble just to get N and V-points. This time, the US
version just have normal points and you can use it to buy
additional levels and characters' costume and of course, new characters.
So, imagine a whole selection of 56 characters to choose
from, 28 from Marvel and another 28 from Capcom. That's how
the title fits in, 'Marvel vs Capcom 2 - New Age of Heroes'.
Most of the characters you have either seen or heard before
from other games, comics and television while other are
quite new in the fighting game like Jill Valentine from
Resident Evil series, Amingo, SonSon and others.
The Arcade mode allows you to play until the end where you
fight the last boss and get your points (even if you Game
Over, you still get some points). Most enemies are easy and
you can actually go to the Options mode and change the
difficulty level. You can even get to feel the vibration of
the Rumble Pack or Puru-puru Pack by turning it on in the
Options. This will get you to get the hang of it.
Instead of the normal two-on-two, this time it's
three-on-three that provides more fun and challenges, triple
Hyper Combos together and many more! You can call in three
of your characters in the same time and the three of them
will do their own Hyper Combos together! You can make use of
the usual system, call it 'helper' or 'striker'. Of course,
characters are always based on their cute looks and ultimate
special powers that are different from one to another.
Usually, playing Arcade forever will make you bored in no
time so get a new controller and get your friend together!
This will not only foster closer friendship (unless he or
yourself don't throw tantrum because of losing), but you
will gain lots of points too by doing this. Trust me, the
best of all fighting games will be totally boring without a
two-player mode (better still, four-player mode!).
Training also allows you to gain points based on how long
you train. This takes advantage and let you train until you
really feel satisfied and master all moves. Other modes
include Secret Factor which allows you to download the
VS. COM game, the game that allows you to trade characters
with your friends. There is even a tutorial on how to use it
in the game! Score Attack of course, lets you get more
scores by playing all over again and you can also view your
scores on each respective modes.
The challenge in the game is great and varies from different
levels you play in the Arcade mode. With more new characters
you have bought, you have more challenge and it all based
whether the difficulty level is high and their own moves
that are controlled by the computer.
Replay Value - 10
As I had said before, without a second player, life in
Marvel vs Capcom 2 will be total bore for you, even if you
had successfully gotten all of the long-awaited 56
characters. Get your brother, your sister, your mother, your
father, your friends or anyone to play with! I'm sure you'll
have great fun you've ever had.
Overall - 10 out of 10
Every thing in the game is absolutely perfect just except
for the 'uncool' background jazzy music. Despite that,
Marvel vs Capcom 2 will be one of the best fighting game
ever! Yes, even better than Marvel vs Capcom and the most
popular game, Soul Calibur. Just remember that 56 characters
and cool new features will wow you. Check it out and take
out some money out of your wallet. It will last your whole
life until another fantastic and a game as fun as this is created.
