Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Punishment for being ahead?
After playing countless hours of this for a couple months, I can only conclude this is one of the worst games I've ever played.

It's not because of graphics. It's not because of controls. It's because the game stops being fun when you realize two things:

1 - Winning is almost pure luck. You have to get at least one "good" item(star, bullet, giant) during most online races to have a chance. I've been in many races where it takes much more, because I've been bombarded constantly by people with stars and bullets. And God forbid you miss a cube entirely.

2 - The really sad thing about this game is the notion that it must "punish" you for being ahead of everyone else. It's no coincidence that 9 out of 10 races in which I am in first place for a length of time, I get hit with the dreaded blue shell. Even worse than that, races are usually so close that once you're hit by something, everyone else piles into you and next thing you know you've gone from first to near last in an instant.

This game at first glance seems like a lot of fun. And for the first few weeks, it is. Then it becomes a frustrating uphill battle against luck and Nintendo's idea that no one should really be better than anyone else. If someone is, we have to knock him down to make it fair.

I worked hard to get over 7000, and I'm proud of that, but it quit being fun a long time ago. I'm tired of battling luck with skill, when luck wins out almost every time.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great game! Must have for any Wii owner!
This game is an absolute blast. I own the Nintendo DS version of this game, and I loved it, but I love the Wii version even more - who can say no to more characters, more karts, and more tracks? The new tracks are brilliant, with colorful visuals and interesting interactions. Now, the graphics aren't anything like that of a PS3 or a XBOX 360, but you bought a Wii - what do you expect? Nintendo has always focused on fun, family-friendly gameplay and revolutionary controls and gameplay, and this game excells in all of these categories. The Wi-Fi support is much better than that of the DS: you can now download and race ghosts from around the world on time-trials and compete in tournaments that resemble the challenge-mode in the DS version. The great thing about the ghosts is that the computer will automatically pick for you "rival ghosts" which are people who have just a few seconds better than you on time. You can also view your rankings on time trials up against people from all over the world on an easy to read scatterplot graph. The only thing I didn't like about Mario Kart Wii was that I had extreme difficulty with the Wii Wheel, and ended up using the nunchuck with the Wiimote (which works extremely well for me). But I don't know how this is for other people: it could be just me. Also, this game can get very difficult and frustrating at times, but not so much that it makes the game less fun. But be prepared to get hit by up to five blue (spiked) shells in one race!
Overall, great fun, and a fun game to play with other people (although we usually end up cursing like sailors as we get knocked of cliffs and hit by shells - both by the CPU and each other). If you own a Wii and want a good, fun multiplayer game, you need to buy this.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Fun, Easy good for all ages
This game is not the most challenging but is great for kids and slow moving adults. Easy to get started. Good fun graphics.
