Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The PSP has gotten better since it was released
If you go back and read my review of the original PSP fat version, you will see that it was none too flattering. However, several things have happened since then that have warmed me up to the PSP:

- Several commercial games have come out in the last couple of years that I really wanted to play. There's now much more of a selection to please both the casual and hardcore gamers.

- The emulation/homebrew scene has really matured, and you don't have to downgrade firmware anymore to switch back and forth. (Although you still need to hack your PSP and install custom firmware for this)

- In addition to the above, the PSP version of the MAME arcade emulator has merged with the GP2x version, so it's actually pretty good now.

- They released the PSP Slim, which is lighter and has video out capabilities, thus making one less reason to own a GP2x

- Bigger size memory sticks means you can hold more stuff on them :)

- Firmware updates have made it possible to play PS1 games

- Recent firmware versions have added stuff that I don't care about personally, but others might.. Tivo-To-Go, Skype, etc.

Overall, I still don't think the PSP does portable gaming as well as the Nintendo DS. And it doesn't do media/emulation/homebrew as well as the GP2x. But if you want all of this functionality and don't want to own/carry around more than one device, the PSP has improved to the point where it can fill both roles adequately. And if you get custom firmware, it improves the unit by 10x. Even if you're not into piracy, being able to copy your legally bought games onto the memory stick and play them yields much faster load times and longer battery life. If they release a firmware update that can play Divx/Xvid files without having to convert them, the GP2x might be in serious trouble :)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - PSP 2000: As Good as any Impulse Buy.
I am on my second PSP. There is nothing wrong with the first one - I bought it back in 2006 as an impulse buy after giving away my iPod (worst impulse buy ever for me). I upgraded to the PSP 2000 because of added functionality I was craving...

Lets start with the negatives:

1) The PSP 2000 feels cheap and you can really tell in comparison to the first generation PSP, Sony has cut down considerably on their manufacturing costs - to the detriment of overall ergonomic quality.

2) The PSP 2000 lacks connectivity to a larger monitor/TV for the purposes of playing games. They must figure this out, imo.

and the positives:

1) The addition of connectivity to a larger screen is huge; watching movies on the big screen has expanded our movie library without sacrificing portability.

2) The PSP 2000 is considerably lighter than the first generation PSP. Albeit trading off build quality.

3) The best part, imo, is the addition of Skype functionality. You can now sign up for a very low cost voip service (through Skype) and make calls right from your PSP. This rounds out a very good handheld device.

If you are in the market for a reasonably-sized, light-weight, handheld device which will allow you to store music, videos, play movies and games, surf the Internet, and make phone calls...

The PSP 2000 is the only option. And Sony does not disappoint.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - It's growing on me
Ok, at first i wasn't sure about this purchase. But after a weekend of uploaded a bunch of Demos, checking out Racket & Clank, and listen to the Internet Radio. Sony's got me. The WIFI reaches more than 25 ft. last about as far as i checked it. The Signal was 50 % strength through a wall or two to the back room. Not too bad. the Radio is clearly broadcasted at that range. Yeah and you can listen to Turkish Radio if that's your thing. It's worth a listen for a little culture people. it has a 50's morris code sounding dial and switcher. witch makes me think we are about to be attacked by Aliens. You can turn that off as well, cause it does get a little high pitched at times.
I think my only real gripe with the system is i wish they would incorporate a better analog stick/botton .. whatever you call it. it's diff. takes some getting used to. Great system, solid package. just don't be an idiot and drop it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - PSP Slim
This is a great console not just for playing it can do a lot of stuff, if you want to have some fun buy it, because it is good and the price is fair...
