I had never played Guitar Hero I or II but knew it was a very popular franchise. I finally got to try it at Christmas time and realized how hard it could be. My son got it for his birthday and has been playing it regularly ever since. The greatest strength about this game is the challenge. "Easy" level to me is challenging enough, but then you have "Medium", "Hard", and "Expert." My son is now playing on Medium. I think it has also given him more interest in playing his real guitar! A definite plus! I could definitely see this being a family favorite except.....
...the downside: Why did they have to make it so downright UGLY!?!? I have been an avid rock music fan since age 3 and continue to discover new indie rock bands each day. I am hacked off that this game is showing kids that "the scene" is what rock music is all about. The characters are nasty, the film clips decrepit, and then ultimately you battle the devil. And while it starts out with some rock classics (except Poison....yuck), it slowly goes downhill with cruddy music like Slipknot and other garbage tunes. I like the inclusion of Queens of the Stone Age, but good music is few and far between on this game. But like another reviewer said, you learn to forgive it and actually have fun playing it.
I like the idea of dedicating the game to a particular band (Aerosmith...not bad) and hopefully they will do more of this (rumored Metallica.....booooooo). But I also think it wouldn't hurt the series to clean up the act a bit and make this fun for everyone.
