I don't really like TPS (Third Person Shooters) as much as FPS (First Person Shooters) and mecha doesn't thrill me (I hated Mechassault) but this one does a pretty decent job.
PROS:
- excellent graphics, good environments, snow, smoke, etc
- some fantastic fire fights
- multitudes of enemies and bosses all with there own behaviors and characteristics gradually introduced to you throughout the game
- tons of work put into the cut-scenes (as much as a half-hour or an hour or so - almost like a mini-movie) and you can thankfully bypass them!
- decent amount of weapon variety with there own characteristics; you can also detach mecha weapons and drag them around
- decent length to the game
- although a TPS, you can zoom in with many weapons to make it appear as if you're in an FPS (although certain actions like reloading will throw you back into TPS).
- vehicles - the game shines here. It's a mecha game (they call it a V-suit) so you get a lot of different things to operate. Big boss anime-style mecha toward the end.
- decent button/stick configurations (although no exact mapping)
- never had to consult the internet because of some glitch or something I was required to do that wasn't intuitive.
CONS:
- No save anywhere (though for the most part you will not need it)
- the entire game bends on you collecting thermal energy (like collecting health packs or armor) or you die, but there is so much of it laying around that it never affects game play. There is no dire urgency to collect it much of the time. Plus, collecting 100 bits of it scattered all over the battlefield is rather annoying. Why not have the game require you to collect 1 pool of the stuff every so often.
- camera isn't always cooperative. your view will occasionally go off into a place you didn't want it to.
- main protagonist character acting leaves much to be desired. Plus he's a bit of a puss and never hits on any of the hot anime chicks in the cut-scenes. 10 million cut scenes and he never even gets to first base.
I'm going to place the story/plot somewhere in the middle even though I didn't really get into it. They put a lot of effort into it (you can tell with all the cut-scenes) and it's a little unfair to criticize games for bad or non-stories (Doom3 didn't need one). Overall a good combo of mecha/TPS.

The single player campaign in Lost Planet wasn't too bad. There were some pretty cool boss battles and the graphics are pretty strong, but the lame story, which is so convoluted it's annoying, really knocks it down a few pegs. The control, save for the turning mechanics feel pretty good and the diversity of weapons, mechs, and fire effects are great. The single player campaign, even with all of the updated graphics has a distinct old-school feel to it... almost giving me the NES vibe of some of the old Capcom games. That's definitely something that gave me a good feeling playing it.
The multiplayer though, is what makes Lost Planet for me. The mayhem that breaks out on levels like Pirate Fortress is totally insane and fun to participate in or watch from afar. The weapons and explosives are a blast to use regardless of some of the balance issues. The team modes are the most fun for me, and Post Grab can be really intense with 2 good teams.

I played tons of games before because i'm a diehard gamer. Lost Planet is one of my favorites. The graphics are beautiful and the gameplay is perfect in my opinion. The easy pick up and go controls make it a game for all players and the storyline is captivating. This is a game for anyone even the newcomers to the world of next generation gaming. Basically, just get it and you have my word that you won't be dissappointed. Ofcourse it gets hard at times but what good game doesn't? Get it get it get it!!!!!!!!!

Lost Planet is beautiful. It was great to play through the single-player game just to explore the amazing levels. The bosses at the end of the levels really make this game stand out. The bosses are big and explosive. At normal difficulty I thought it was just right for providing a challenge without getting frustrated. All XBox-360 owners should get a chance to play though the single-player game during the winter.

I have to agree with most of the other reviewers, thankfully I only rented this game. A very high contrast game visually, you go from the blinding white snowscape to the dark hives of the bad things, oh and there are also bad people too. I mean honestly humans are fighting for their existence against huge bugs AND fighting each other at the same time?
The story is complete nonsense, right down to the FAMAS assault rifles you use that are current day issue weapons, good old standby shotgun and the vehicles/mechs are slow and cumbersome to work with as well as the snowmobiles, etc. Also it's understandably slow to run/walk through heavy snow so why not do what Star Wars did with the animal like a horse or why not mount a snow plow on the front of this guy or jet skis, jet snowboard, magnetic-hover-jet-snowboard, something futuristic!!
You can also see the update lines on the screen with the hardware trying to keep up, honestly the last time I saw that was on my PS2 playing God of War, a MUCH better game. Please would somebody have a story that is viable, these people could do space travel to another planet and actually live there, their weapons and vehicles would be more advanced and they wouldn't need this thermal stuff from bugs to get heat and survive.
I don't recommend this game as a purchase unless you rent it and love it.
