Metroid: Zero Mission is my favorite Game Boy Game. It's a blast!!!
Pros: Graphics are way better than the NES Metroid. The controls are sweet and the power-ups are awesome. The music is just insanely cool.
Cons: There are no cons for this awesome game!
Graphics-8/10- The graphics are good, better than the NES but it isn't very detailed like Super Metroid is. The bosses are hecka good-looking though. The creatures are okay.
Controls-10/10- The controls take only a few seconds to learn and something cool is that there is a crouch feature-something that the NES doesn't have.
Music-!!!!!- The music is just spectacular. My favorite is the Kraid theme-I hum it everyday.
Time-10/10-The game is not that short and not that long either. The good thing is that there is a second quest after you defeat the mother brain so you can play some more.
Total-10/10-I honestly recommend this game to anyone who is interested in the Metroid series. I hope this review is helpful!!!

Metroid Zero Mission is one of my favorites game, period. Although it is pretty short @ about 6 hours or so, you'll have a blast the entier time. The beauty is in the simplicity of the gameplay. You, as Samus Aran, run around an alien world trying to eradicate the threat of Space Pirates, here how you do it:
A. Shoot baddies
B. Jump. A lot.
C. Proceed to next area.
There is a heavy emphasis on exploration, in fact you'll be revisiting a lot of the map, as this is a part of the games structure: When there is a seemingly out-of-reach ledge, you'll have to come back once you've discovered how to jump much higher. The Metroid series pioneered this mechanic. Once you've played through, you'll realize that there are many different paths to take, sometimes you'll learn how to reach that too-high ledge without the aid of a boost. The game features multiple endings based on your item collection percentage and overall time to complete. Buy this game, you'll fall in love with it, too.

This is clearly the best of all the GBA games we have. It has shooting action, levels, exploration, high tension, boss battles, hidden passageways... Awesome. My only critique is the length...it could have gone on a little longer. Perhaps one more boss battle would be good. Once you finish, you can go back and try to complete things you missed, and can play the original Metroid.

When I first sat down with this game, I was in total awe. With updated graphics, remixed music, better sounds, newer areas, and a map (yes, for the young kids, the original Metroid had no map!), it's a Classic Metroid fanboy's fantasy. You even play as suitless Samus in a stealth mission, armed only with an automatic-charging pistol (this part is definitely one of the toughest parts in the game, since the pistol only stuns and the Space Pirates take off 100 HP when they touch you or shoot you). The game even tells you where to go by using Chozo statues, making it much less frustration. However, this is also a problem. The game is easily beaten in 1-2 hours in one sitting due to the fact that you know where to go with the Chozo statues and the new weapons. When you get to Tourian, the Metroids are easily destroyed, as opposed to how you drop off the elevator in the original and next thing you know 2 or 3 Metroids are sucking you bone dry, and you watch as your health just goes from full to 0 in 10 seconds. Also the bosses are sissies (especially Ridley, who screeches like a little girl while you stand under him and bombard him with missiles. Yes this is a strategy on how to easily beat Ridley), but I can't say the same for Mother Brain (who is actually far tougher than in the original), who actually uses energy waves to damage you alot this time. But still, this is an excellent, fun to play remake of such a classic game. Once you finish this game, you'll understand how the Metroid series has been classified as one of the greatest video game series of all time.

Overall, I like Metroid: Zero Mission better than the original Metroid. Here are the improvements of one game to the next:
1--The use of power bombs
2--The ability to recharge and save your game, as well as using your map.
3--The screw attack
4--The high-jump ability
5--an extended story
6--An optional boss that gives you charge beam
7--Another boss not included in the original.
8--Enhanced graphics, music, and sound.
I found that these changes greatly enhanced gameplay. However, the game is just far tyoo short. I beat it in 4 hours and 15 minutes on the hardest difficulty. Sure, they extended the game...but they didn't extend it enough in my opinion.
The original Metroid was a bit more challenging, but I like this one better because it took the original Metroid and improved on it. It gave the game a better feel by enhancing graphics, sound, and music. It increased Samus' arsenal by giving her all those extra abilities. It even included an optional boss that pops out from time to time. You earn the charge beam from it.
There is also a new boss that you must fight later on that was not in the original Metroid. In fact there are two other extra bosses. And many new enemies as well.
But there is one thing I do not like about this game. In the original Metroid, you beat the game after killing the Mother Brain. In this game, after you kill it, you get sent to an excavation site, but you CANNOT revisit the earlier parts of the game! This was a let-down to me, mainly because I like to explore a lot in games so I can collect stuff. That having been said, I recommend this: in one file, get to the Mother Brain and save. Now copy that file, but in the second copied file, beat the Mother Brain and then the whole game. Explore and collect stuff in the first file, and beat the game in the second file.
I shall conclude my review with this statement: overall, I think Metroid Zero Mission is better because of all the useful improvements and the extension to the game. However, it would have been nice to explore more, and if it was more challenging. Regardless, this game is still fun, and you should buy it, but not for the replay value.
