One of the biggest trends in video games right now it's re-vamping old games for a new generation. "Metroid: Zero Mission" with other games like "Tomb Raider: Anniversary", and to some extend "New Super Mario Bros." all claim to not be a remake but a update of the original concept. "MetroidL Zero Mission" retells (as the box art puts it, the "real" story) of Samus Aran's very first adventure. Taking it's cue from the mid 80's NES classic "Metroid", "Zero Mission" is a throughly enjoyable and classic 2-D gaming experience for the GBA or Nintendo DS.
As the adventure begins anyone familiar with the original game will notice that the enviroments look similar to the original with different layouts and gaming textures. New areas, weapons, and enemies have all been added to create the redux of a classic (and oft released) video game.
These updates for the most part succeed. The graphics are crisp, clear, and detailed. Especially when playing on the high res DS. The control is what you expect from Nintendo--right on and intuitive. The music is also a well produced effort, with many familiar tracks being remixed for this version.
But what is missing is the sense of adventure and sci-fi from the orginial. Maybe it's because the series is so well known and Samus' true identity is readily accessible by many fans. Also many of the updates, for example the new grip ability take away some of the challenge that made completing all those old games so rewarding.
In the end, "Zero Mission" is a great, solid, and engaging game. It's fun to see a different side of the Metroid mythos and the added graphical powers and newly introduced areas of Zebes (hauntingly familiar to those fans of "Super Metroid") help add depth the story. A definate treat for those fans of old school side-scrolling action/adventure gaming!

If you've played Metroid Fusion then you should know what to expect. Both are short and easy but very fun to play and I enjoy both games. If you're worried about this game being nothing but a rehash of the original, don't. In addition to a graphics update, the maps and gameplay have been altered quite a bit, plus there are new items and mini-bosses and the old bosses have been altered. Basically, the original Metroid was just used as a skeleton for this game. However, this also includes the entire original Metroid. It opens up once you beat the game. Of further note, this game uses remixes of the original game's music but they don't alter it too much and it sounds great.
As I said before, the game is a bit too short and too easy. You can probably beat it in one evening but it's great fun and I have personally replayed it several times.

This game is a big improvement to the original 1986 version of Metroid. Although the storyline was the same, there were many enhancements to the overall gameplay.

Metroid: Zero Mission is my favorite Game Boy Game. It's a blast!!!
Pros: Graphics are way better than the NES Metroid. The controls are sweet and the power-ups are awesome. The music is just insanely cool.
Cons: There are no cons for this awesome game!
Graphics-8/10- The graphics are good, better than the NES but it isn't very detailed like Super Metroid is. The bosses are hecka good-looking though. The creatures are okay.
Controls-10/10- The controls take only a few seconds to learn and something cool is that there is a crouch feature-something that the NES doesn't have.
Music-!!!!!- The music is just spectacular. My favorite is the Kraid theme-I hum it everyday.
Time-10/10-The game is not that short and not that long either. The good thing is that there is a second quest after you defeat the mother brain so you can play some more.
Total-10/10-I honestly recommend this game to anyone who is interested in the Metroid series. I hope this review is helpful!!!
