Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - cute, but contrived
i just finished this. it only took 2 years. basically, i progressed until i got stuck, then stopped. when i got reinspired, sometimes several months later, i took up where i left off. often, but not always, this allowed me to get past the sticking point. what annoyed me is that i was forced to cheat more than in any other game. i couldnt get Aussie off his throne, couldnt get the captain to break the boulder, and i had no idea how to get herman to talk. otherwise than that, i was able to navigate through the many contrived puzzles, sometimes by a rare flash of brilliance, but most often by trial and error. one example is the use of artificial skin to make a trampoline to get into a second story window; there are many such contrivances.

also, the game need patches. there were places where the program failed and the screen turned white (not blue) as on the landing beach of jambalaya island. the patch was readily available and worked perfectly. otherwise, the game was flawless on my old imac.

on the positive side, this game was definitely funny; the names of locations and establishments are generally "bad" puns, and many of the comments are hilarious. the games also cute, with loads of foolish but amiable characters, whose dorkiness made them appealing. for example, there was brittany, the young girl on lucre island, who, by her own account, had no talent, but wanted to be a rock star, or the school teacher who, whenever there was a false fire alarm, would come running out yelling "help! another fire". this game is very long; you get a lot for your money.

in summary, this game is very enjoyable because of the character development and humor, but it loses points due to the forced puzzles with loose logic. i got through riven unaided, and it was very bad for my ego to have to use a walkthrough 3 times. monkey island is very entertaining, though, and definitely worth the price.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Love it.
I teach high school. Bought this to reward my students who excel. Heck with them! I played it and laughed the whole time. Dear Lucas Arts: We want MORE!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Escape from Monkey Island is worth the money!
As some of you may know, this game is the fourth in a series of four (so far). Even though it's the first and only one I have, I absolutely loved it. The storyline is intriguing, the characters are charming, and the graphics are fantastic. I'd really like to rate this 4 1/2 stars, but it compensated in addictive gameplay what it lost in other areas. My only complaints are that the puzzle solutions (if you can call them puzzles) are hard to figure out on your own, and I didn't get far without help from a hint guide. But this is one of those games that you can experience without having to figure out for yourself, and I enjoyed it just as much with help. Although it is a Mac OS 9 application, it works seamlessly with OS X and caused me no technical problems. Definitely a good buy!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This monkey rocks!
I just ordered the new Monkey Island, and it's awesome! Great humor, storyline, and graphics! The only problem is some bugs, which don't matter because Aspyr already has an update out. This is a great way to return to the Monkey Island series and LucasArts games on the Mac. Hopefully, LucasArts will let Aspyr port over some other games soon.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - That's the 2nd biggest Monkey Head I've ever seen
The 4th entry in the Monkey Island series still doesn't capture the magic of the original, but comes closer than CMI. Gone is the point and click interface of previous incarnations, having been replaced here with something resembling a console control setup. Controling Guybrush can be difficult at times, as it's not easy to tell what areas your character can move to. The 3d reeks of a 'let's see what we can do with the technology' rather than 'what would be best for the story' Of course the system requirements skyrocket with this, and even on minimal settings, a 266 G3 struggles. The storyline was rather humerous though, and the voice acting and soundtrack superb. The puzzles seem to have just the right difficulty level. These plusses more than make up for the shortcomings earning EMI 4 of 5 stars
