I'm a retro gamer of sorts, being the owner of an Atari 2600, a Sega Genesis, a Playstation, and several PC platforms. I recently acquired a Nintendo 64 so I could play Starfox 64. I bought a "new" (unused) Nintendo brand Expansion Pack because I plan on playing Donkey Kong, and I didn't want to deal with any of the problems I've read about with company X brand upgrades. It comes with the removal tool too so you won't be stuck with trying to pry out the standard (4MB) Jumper Pack with a butter knife. I've read many reviews of this product on this site that knock it and question its value. However, I've discovered an added bonus to the upgrade.
The Nintendo 64 was one of the final cartridge-type systems to be built, before CDs became the rage. Any experienced gamer will tell you that a last generation cartridge system in general has faster load times than a first generation CD console, hence a big reason for Nintendo's decision to go cartride with the 64. Those of you with a Playstation can sympathize. So, I installed the Expansion Pack upgrade and, to my surprise, I noticed a slight improvement in load times over the standard Jumper Pack with Starfox 64, a game that isn't credited with utilizing the 4MB RAM upgrade. The graphics do appear to be about the same.
Others question Nintendo's motivation: Did they know ahead of time that they would eventually be marketing games that needed 8MB RAM instead of the standard 4MB? Perhaps, but read the fine print folks. Nintendo is pretty clear on which games will benefit from the upgrade (enhanced graphics, unlocked features) and which will not. Purchase accordingly. If I had to make a choice of whether to buy it again or not I would do so. Having it will allow me (or you) to play virtually all of the games in the 64's library, and we're only talking about a $25 (or less) investment.

For those of us who can't let go of our precious old Nintendo systems, the Expansion Pack is a must-have. Its not compatible with all games, but it doesn't do anything negative. Some games give you the option to increase the resolution with the expansion pack. Others, like Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, require it.
For the price, I'd add it to other purchases to save on shipping, but it still beats out buying it in EB!

This was a joke created by Nintendo to rake in more cash. They KNEW they where going to use an expansion ram pac, for games, hence the slot in the console itself.
I have not noticed any difference in graphics on non expansion games. Having to have an expansion for certain games like Perfect Dark to get the full use of the cartridge was rather annoying as well. Or haveing to have it to play games period.
Nintendo has made it a polocy that each game system they come out with is so different from the last that none of the previous components worked with the prior. Sadly I am adicted to some games such as Zelda and Final Fantasy, so as much as I dislike the expansion and the non backwards compatability of NES systems I will still purchase them.
Pretty much if you dont need the expansion, dont bother, but if you want to play games like Zelda Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark to the fullest, you will be like me and fork out the cash for the RAM expansion.
And you can use a car or house key to remove the old jumper chip from the front if you are carefull in the process.

I mean it's good they made it or you couldn't play yellow cartridges. Like Diddy Kong64. But let me tell you it is a PAIN. First you have to get a butter knife to take the lid off so you can pry the pak in. This takes a good 3 min.
Overall;
You need it if you want to play ''yellow'',

[I don't normally go for short reviews, but I don't think much needs to be said here.]
When the Nintendo 64 was the supreme video gaming system in the video gaming world, Nintendo wanted a way that they could make their gaming system more powerful, and to accomplish this, they released the Expansion Pak accessory. How well does this thing work? Read on for my review.
PROS:
-WITH THIS ACCESSORY, YOU CAN PERFORM VARIOUS ACTIONS IN VIDEO GAMES THAT YOU COULDN'T WITHOUT IT. For example, the Pak is required to play The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64. Also, it's required to play most of Perfect Dark. You also need one to do multiplayer in some games.
CONS:
-DESPITE WHAT THE PRESSES SAY, THIS ACCESSORY DOES NOT IMPROVE THE GRAPHICS OR THE RESOLUTION. Am I the only one who doesn't see a difference?
-THE ACCESSORY IS A COMPLETE RIP-OFF. Can you honestly believe that Nintendo would make gamers buy an accessory just to play some games?
OVERALL:
-If you get a Nintendo 64, it's good to have one of these because it unlocks various features in games, but the fact of the matter remains - this thing is a rip-off! When buying a used Nintendo 64, make sure it already has one in it, so that you don't have to buy one separately!
