Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This is awesome!!! Screw Play Station 2! I'm buying an XBox 360. A true gaming experience!
I don't have XBox 360, but for those that do and are interested in purchasing NHL 08' who haven't, don't hesitate! I played this with my boyfriend at his house on his XBox 360 and now I want an XBox! It makes gaming a lot more fun and exciting, especially NHL 08'. The graphics are more realistic, you have control if you play against the CPU. You vs. CPU is good even multi player is good. I didn't find any delays as they are typical in the older versions of NHL when there is too much action going on around the net and goal tenders-not the case this time! The background music is better to listen to. The commentators this time around are right on target. I found with the older versions the commentators would be saying something not even related to the current actions and would cause confusion. Playing shoot out mode is more fun! I love how you have more control on your team players skating/movement and the skill drills are fun too! The skill drills improve your over all playing skill. I recommend this to anyone as I'm very picky when it comes to gaming such as this! Playing this game on XBox 360, makes my PS2 NHL 08' go to the bottom of the list in ratings. Don't think about it if you are a hockey fan and love hockey, buy it! You won't regret it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Crunch and shoot...
I've not owned a version of NHL in several years, but it didn't matter.

Instantly recognizable and playable for the NHL veteran and the newbie, this is an excellent job by EA of updating the game and making some serious improvements. As others have noted, the AI is pretty up to snuff, actually being competent, sharp and tough. The defense swarms, the computer-controlled D poking, bumping, and of course making bone-crunching, somersault-causing checks. They put up opposition, in short, as do the goalies who are generally very, very good.

The game looks fantastic, even without HDTV graphics. All of the faces, arenas, and almost too many uniform options (you can change the player's gloves, helment and stick to a different brand?) Absolutely addictive, all of the previous action is here but vastly improved. One-timers, slappers, beat-downs, insane saves, and even fights have returned. Oddly, though, they seem to have done away with five-minute majors (except for the rare fighting), and double minors, and some penalties altogether (goalie interference, and boarding). Also, it seems like faceoffs get dominated by one team over the other quite often. But these are minor gripes when you look at the whole game.

There's a dynasty mode that is clearly for obsessists, as you control the team, the minor league affiliate, the books, the salary cap, the morale, etc. In addition to the NHL and Olympic teams, there's the entire AHL, as well as the Finnish league and Swedish league. Plenty of small gem teams and players to find.

Highly recommended game for XBoxers. Completely addictive, and this time with a very competent computer that will have you swearing at the screen as Finland runs up the score.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great game for real hockey players
I owned NHL 07, and enjoyed the skill stick, however, there were several things that drove me nuts about the game overall. I would drive into the zone and drop the puck back to my defensmen at the point only to discover them wandering around the neutral zone. Similarly, I'd bring the puck across center ice and watch some knucklehead wander offsides. If you actually play real hockey (or watch it) you'd appriciate my frustration. 2 on 1's were useless, as your teamate often stops altogether or skates too far in (past the goal line). Rebounds (a critical part of the game) were all but non-existant. Also there was no practice session (other than the tedious shoot outs) for figureing out how to use the skill stick.

Well NHL 08 fixed these problems and added several more features, making it the best all around hockey game (or any sports) game I've ever played. Your teamates play pretty good position. You can pass around the perimeter, back to the point, etc. Breakouts look great. 2on1s are meaningful. Getting a loose puck in front of the net is often productive. The goalie is much more a part of the defense. There is a nice practice session to help you figure out the skill stick and develop plays. The graphics are improved (your reflections disapear as the ice deterioriates through each period, but your shadow remains). The skating mechanics are much more realistic - fluid and graceful, although this may be frustrating to gamers who want instant response (however unrealistic that is in real hockey). I don't know how non-hockey playing gamers like this game, but as someone who's played serious ice hockey (high school, college, and now old-man league) I love this game.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - OPEN ICE HIT!!!!
EA is on the money with this one. Physics are awesome, it's great to watch the players glide across the ice, what's more is that you can almost feel the player skate through the controller. Player animations are great; trips, falls, hits, fights, are shown in their accurate glory. Today I was playing & had a player fall loosing his stick, completely awesome. Strategy has definetly been upped this year. You can't do the same play or strategy, you got to switch it up, your opponents learn quick & will be on you like... well like... someone not switching up their plays. I've had several EA Hockey titles, this one by far is the best. EA this year has really shown their knowledge & dedication in other games also, FIFA '08 to name one. In my humble opinion of course. I'm playing the Vancover Canucks in a Dynasty Mode. Not the best team, nor the worst, but this game is accurate in that you generally lose w/ good teams, win w/ poor teams. Sometimes it's vice versa, it's pretty cool to win against a team that is better than you, but you definetly have to work for it. All in all a great hockey game, you will not be disappointed. Ryan

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Fun game, a little difficult for younger players
Purchased xbox 360 for the boys this Christmas as well as 2 games - NHL 08 being one of them. The graphics are good, game play is exciting. My children are 12, 8 and 6 and I found this to be a bit difficult for the 8 and 6 yr olds. Would recommend for over 10.
