Rating: - A little too dark
This game is an abomination, and if you even allow children to see it, YOU ARE A BAD, BAD PARENT.
The folks at Starbreeze apparently thought their masterpiece "Riddick" didn't delve deeply enough into inhumanity and depravity; the result is one of the most powerfully negative experiences I've ever had. This game literally made me feel weird and bad. Not to spoil anything, but, their version of Hell is appropriately a WWI battlefield. Inarguably the worst tragedy humanity has ever visited on itself. It's all a bit too much.
I say these things as a fan of the game (and Mike Patton disciple).
It's kind of like having everything you ever asked for and being horrified by it.
Even in its earlier releases, Starbreeze was an innovator that took chances, pushing the player to make decisions/realizations that seemed almost outside of the context of a videogame. No change here.
The gameplay shines brilliantly as you are forced to learn and think on your feet. The shooting mechanic is superb, and the immersion factor is off the scales. And for those who like a challenge, the game ain't easy, even on "Easy." Peppered with surprising humor (for an adult audience) and moments of shock that truly shock, The Darkness is an emotional ride that has pushed possible far beyond what even a veteran gamer might even expect. I truly felt rage towards the end, and literally cried during the final sequence.
If you can look past the long load times between areas and glitchy control of the Creeping Dark, you're in for a gaming experience without equal.
You have been warned.
Rating: - good game play.......
I liked the game; especially the darkness powers and the creatures you could summon (especially urinating on corpses and the jestures) but it was lacking in the story department, I really didn't care about the mafia parts but I have to say the game is fairly original and worth checking out.
Rating: - More action, less talk and travel!
Awesome theme / mechanics / ideas. If you like eating hearts and summoning the dark forces. I think storylines (in general) are overrated. This has too many breaks and jumping around. The mob angle doesnt fit.
If you like DARK horrific themes u cant go wrong
Rating: - Raucous NY ganster fun!
I've only played through about maybe half the game, and although the gameplay is a little quirky, the story and visual style of the game are incredible. The voice acting is great, and really reminds you of those New York gansters with their no-BS, trash talking attitude. Definitely not for the younger kids! But definite fun for the rest!
Rating: - Very violent but relatively fun
Forget about Doom, Gears of War, and Grand Theft Auto. If you want a game who's language and violence make the most of their "M" rating then you've found it in The Darkness. I enjoy all types of games. Generally, I pay little attention to the violence and language in a particular game because I see the evolution of video games much the same as movies. Their are ratings for a reason. But The Darkness takes it to the next level. Are all "M" rated games the same? Not unless "Fracture" and "Resevoir Dogs" are the same. So if you're squeemish, you might want to pass.
All that aside, this was a very good game. The controls are good, the graphics are solid, and the story is inventive and tight. The whole going back in time thing is hokey but otherwise it's a solid buy for fans of the shooter genre that want something a little different and don't mind ripping a guy's heart out and eating it.
