Honestly, if you became a gamer before the PS1, I'm only exaggerating a little bit here. Even if this had simply been the Phantasy Star Collection, it would be a steal. But you in fact get 33 (!) games on one disc. Those of you who remember the sticker shock of Phantasy Star IV ($80?!) will know what I mean.
The controls are smooth and easy (games of this era used far fewer buttons). A feature you will be thankful for is the three savestate slots for each game. That's right, I said each game gets three. This comes in very handy when you're trying for a Chaos Emerald in Sonic, or getting ready for a tough boss battle. The savestate system is in fact superior to the version on Wii Virtual Console. Speaking of which, to get all the games on SGC for the WVC (even if they were available) would cost 26,400 Wii Points. That's $264 for those of you playing at home. If you can find even three titles you like on here, it's paid for itself. 33 games for less than the price of 3 is what it is.
To put it simply, if you have a PS2 or backward compatible PS3 (this title works perfectly on the 80GB model), and you have a classic-gamer bone in your body, BUY THIS GAME!
To save you a search, here's a game list:
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle * Altered Beast (Genesis and Arcade versions) * Bonanza Bros. * Columns * Comix Zone * Decap Attack * Ecco the Dolphin * Ecco: The Tides of Time * Ecco Jr. * Flicky * Gain Ground * Golden Axe I-III * Kid Chameleon * Phantasy Star II-IV * Ristar * Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi * Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & 2 * Super Thunder Blade * Sword of Vermilion * Vectorman 1 & 2 * Virtua Fighter 2 (Genesis version) * Future Spy * Tac/Scan * Zaxxon * Zektor (The last four were Sega Arcade titles. First release of Golden Axe 3 stateside (aside from Sega Channel))
Rating: - Something for Everyone!
I did not own a Genesis back in the day, I owned Nintendo stuff... so a lot of these games are new to me, with the exception of arcade experience. (Note to those born around 1990 : Sonic and Mario didn't always star in the same video games!)
What strikes me as impressive for this collection is that it contains a wide variety of material, so even if you absolutely hate a game or genre on this system, you are probably going to thoroughly enjoy others. There are other fun things trying all these games out - seeing the difference between some of the earlier genesis games to the later ones. Just look at the graphics with phantasy star 2 compared to phantasy star 4, for example.
If you do not like spending the time and energy on RPGs, that is something to consider before buying this. But, there is still plenty to enjoy ignoring the phantasy star collection, especially for a retail price of 20 bucks.
Overall, the graphics and gameplay have held up well - these are mostly 16 bit games, so a jump ahead from NES fare. And yes, true this is still not the definitive genesis collection, but the closest Sega has gotten, and once again, 20 dollars. Strong Buy for those still playing on Playstation 2.
Rating: - Worth the price for the Phatasy Star titles alone
Ok, so why rate this perfect? Well i see it like this. Phantasy Star 2,3, and 4 is on this compilation, which i would pay $20 for easy. All these other games are just a bonus, and many of them are actually good! It's a steal and if you feel uncomfortable about playing Phantasy Star 2 without playing the original, then pick up the Phantasy Star collection for the GBA if you have one. What buy a collection for GBA then buy this one? Well the GBA collection does not have PS4 but it does have the original and the original is worth the price of the collection. So you might be saying, "Phantasy Star this, Phantasy Star that. What if I don't like Phantasy Star!" Well then this compilation won't be worth that much to you, unless you really like golden axe, shinobi and the ecco series(suck in my opinion). You won't find any streets of rage here, which is unfortunate, since those who don't like PStar would find more worth to this compilation if it had it. If you like and want Phantasy Star, then buy this compilation!
Rating: - SEGA GENESIS COLLECTION
I ENJOYED THIS GAME COLLECTION THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH GAMES. I ENDED UP BUYING THREE SEGA COLLECTIONS TO ACTUAL GET THE GAMES I WANTED. BUT I GUESS THAT'S HOW MAKING MONEY OPERATES! IF YOU LIKE THE OLD GENESIS GAMES BUY THIS TITLE BUT DON'T EXPECT ALL OF YOUR FAVORITE CLASSIC GAMES ON HERE.
Rating: - great game
this is a great game because it has vectorman 1 and 2; it played as great when it was in its sega days.
