Xbox 360 sets a new pace for digital entertainment. More than just a cutting-edge game system, Xbox 360 also integrates high-definition video, DVD movie playback, digital music, photos, and online connectivity into one sleek, small tower.

About the Xbox 360 Hardware

Xbox 360 with wireless controller
Xbox 360, shown with separately sold wireless controller, is a sleek, customizable gaming and entertainment system.

Xbox 360 is much smaller than its predecessor--it measures approximately 3.3 by 12.2 by 10.2 inches and weighs 7.7 lbs. It's powered by custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz. It also carries a custom ATI graphics processor 10 MB of embedded DRAM. This is powerful enough to draw 500 million triangles per second. In other words, it makes for great looking games in standard TV definition, and even better thanks to built-in support for HDTV 1080i televisions. It also supports the widescreen 16:9 format.

The unit has a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, which plays both the game media and progressive-scan DVD movies right out of the box (the Media Remote is sold separately). For game-save and media storage, users can choose between 64MB flash Memory Unit, or detachable and upgradeable 20GB hard drive. Along with storing files, the hard drive will make the Xbox 360 backward-compatible with part of the existing Xbox game library.

Xbox 360 uses a refined button layout for its controllers. Back and Start buttons sit at the center of the controller and between them is a new Xbox Guide button, which instantly takes the user to the Xbox 360 user interface. From there, they can check for friends online, access personal digital content like photos and songs, and more. The black and white buttons of the first Xbox controllers have been replaced with new shoulder buttons placed above the left and right triggers. Xbox 360 can accommodate up to four wireless controllers and has three USB 2.0 slots to use for wired controllers or for streaming your digital media from digital cameras, MP3 players, and any Windows XP-based PC. Microsoft has announced plans for a upcoming video-conferencing camera that will work with the system.

Xbox 360 can manage your games, your online friends, and your personal digital library.

About Xbox 360 Games and Media
Xbox 360 is scheduled to launch with more than 20 launch titles, with several more slated to be released within the following month. Launch titles include Madden NFL 2006, Project Gotham Racing 3, and the long-awaited Perfect Dark Zero. All Xbox 360 titles can be played in either standard or high-definition resolution in 16:9 widescreen, with anti-aliasing for smoother graphics. Game designers will be able to take advantage of the system's multi-channel surround sound. The Xbox 360's digital media allows users to supplement any game's music from tracks in their own personal library.

About Xbox Live
A built-in Ethernet port allows users to connect their system to a broadband connection for access to the new Xbox Live Silver. The included service lets anyone create a Gamertag and gamer card to express your online identity, chat live with voice chat (separately sold headset required), and connect to the Xbox Live Marketplace to buy expansions, maps, and other digital goodies for your games. The subscription service Xbox Live Gold adds to that online competition, game stats, and video chat/messaging. The separately sold wireless adapter supports the common 802.11a, -b, and -g standards.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - To bashers and flame posters
I know that many people have complained about the system thus far and I do understand where your points are coming from. There are bugs in the system, for example: There is the issue of over-heating (Happened in the first Xbox aswell) 2) There is a Microsoft SoD (Happens via overheating of the processor) and finally the crashes that happen in certain spots in Madden. Now before we come straight to Amazon and bash the system lets think. Does a system really work perfectly 100% out of the gate. NO! so take into consideration a 1-2 month grace period where all bugs are fixed and finalized. Thats that. Now a few posts that have me fairly steamed are those insisting that your paying $400 for "better graphics" and those saying PS3 will be teh good cuz of itz awesome bluu-ray. Number 1 the Xbox 360 "better graphics" are cause for real celebration. They used some brand new partition technology and real use of vector graphics in 3 seperate partition cores to achieve this . . . not cheap. You can record T.V chat, DVD's, CD's store music. Pretty much buying a computer for $400 which is in my view a really good deal since your "only buying a video game system". Secondly, to PS3 people. It hasnt come out yet so chill. Yes they use the Cell processor that runs 3x faster then the fastest Anthlon or Pentium. It hasnt even been finalized yet nor has it been fully tested so the clock speed is un-reliable. Using blu-ray technology can you say backwards compatiable... didnt think so. Anyway just thought everyone should know what they are getting into before bashing or flame posting kthxbai.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not quite phenominal cosmic power, but a heck of a lot of fun!
I didn't want to camp out in the cold for this (or any) system, so I got up early and stood in line at Target instead, and happened to get there early enough to learn that this store had wisely withheld information about how many units they actually had from the crowd that camped out to give everyone else a shot at the console. I managed to get a core unit, I was hoping for a premium console, but oh well. I went to best buy to pick up most of the things I was missing out on getting only the core system, and hooked it up to my TV.
To my surprise I learned my HDTV had only been running in 480P the last several years, and it cannot do 720P, instead it jumps right to 1080I, but here's what makes the 360 so great, it's the only device in my home which can utilize my TV's 1080I capabilities, and to a great result. Aliasing is nearly a thing of the past, and that alone makes this new console worthwhile. Playing games in true high definition is awe inspiring, but to be honest I was still expecting more from this next gen system.
The 360 reminds me of the Dreamcast, full of excellent and wonderful games, already, (I have 6 so far and each are a blast) but it feels underpowered in comparison to forthcoming competing systems (PS3 in particular). I was disappointed with character models, and textures in Perfect Dark Zero, as well as the lack of polygons used in Kameo. Quake 4 features some amazing texture maps, but the characters still, look like they're built out of boxes sloppily stacked together, its nothing on what Metal Gear Solid 4 looks like for PS3. That doesn't mean this system isn't a good investment, only that the graphics (aside from being in HD wide screen) are only a marginal improvement over the original Xbox so far. I'm sure that better looking games will be available soon. Again I must emphasize that despite the disappointment in graphics the games are a blast.
Generally I get one, maybe two games for a console at launch (handhelds are a different story, I generally grab more since I have more time for handhelds of late) and the reason for this is simply because of time constraints as well as a generally poor selection of games available. The PS2, in example, launched with a huge collection of generally abysmal games. XBox itself (Halo aside for Halo fans) wasn't much better, and I thought GameCube was doing well with 3 games at launch I picked up... here I picked up 5, and went back for a sixth, and each one is fantastic! The reviews for the remaining games that I have not gotten have also been very good, unlike PSP which had a list of games that were generally bad and rated accordingly. At any rate, this has become the best launch line up ever simply because the games are so much fun. I'm eager to see what else M$ has up their sleeves for the rest of the line up. The only weakness in the launch line up is the over abundance of first person shooters, and the lack of RPGs does make for limited variety in the line up thus far, one I hope MS will move to correct quickly.
Some may be disenchanted from not being able to get one at launch, but rest assured there should be plenty of systems to go around this holiday season as new allotments are released weekly. M$ should have planned better for the launch event than they did, but regardless don't go over Ebay to get one. It'll probably be like the Nintendo DS where the initial batch sells out quickly, but regular shipments of new systems will keep coming rendering Ebay and other price gougers out of business for the season.
Backward compatibility does have some issues, what few Xbox games are backward compatible often have technical issues rendering them unplayable. Out of my own collection of "compatible" titles only DOA 3 seems to work without serious problems. I hope M$ moves to correct that quickly as I am eager to free up some space on my shelf by eliminating the original Xbox, but still have too many un-played Xbox titles to do so.
The main thing is that over all X360 does not disappoints, it has a great controller, awesome High Definition capabilities, and great online play. There are some issues to clean up, backward compatibility needs to be refined, expanded and improved, more variety of games, and better use of the technology than what the launch line ups did. These issues aside prepare for an awesome gamming experience. Don't miss out!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Almost killed me!
Let me cut to the chase. I'm not under 13, i just didn't want to be foolish by signing into this online store. I waiting seven hours in line for the xbox 360, the whole time thinking about the potential that this little machine has. I have heard that this is enviromental and uses less power consumption, wrong! The external power supply is massive! This thing is unsafe. One day I was playing PG3 on my new deathtrap, forgetting to turn it off before going to the store. I came back in half an hour and the power supply caught fire! I quickly ran and unblocked the power supply from the outlet, noticing that the black powersupply was melted on the top. I was furious! I saw sparks and smoke coming out of this! If i had gone to the store a little longer my house would have been in ruins.

Don't get this! Microsoft has many problems with overheating. I figured that the problem must have been solved, they had 4 years to do this. But to catch fire. That is unacceptable.

This system seems to be good and the best there is, but its not. The specifications seem to be amazing, but to think of it, you are comparing it to outdated technology.
PS3 is going to have blu-ray compact discs, while this only has dual layer dvds, without any plans to incorporate hd-dvd.

Also the picture resolution isn't the greatest. With support up to 1080i (no full-resolution progressive scan) and no dual tv support. Unlike ps3 that has dual support for full 1080p.
And this system only has an analog display connection, while getting a simulated hdmi port.

This specs don't matter when something hazardest happens. Think about the future. This video game system is not worth it until they find a way to fix this problem.

Please, don't get this. It has too many problems.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Big Disappointment
Xbox 360 is really Xbox 1.5....The graphics are no better than the current games on your home PC. The console has MANY problems. It crashes just like a Windows PC! I mean get real. Consoles are supposed to just play games and never crash. I have never seen a Playstation 2 crash. This is insane! The Xbox 360 is also overheating and having system errors.

Microsoft products are dangerous. A woman almost died recently because her Xbox caught fire due to a defective power cord. If you buy one of these make sure you turn it off if you leave the room. It really is dangerous not to.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Not at all worth the money.
After scanning over various catelogs in the newspaper a weekend or two ago and noticing the Xbox 360 and its ridiculous price -- 400 bucks -- I've come to a conclusion: People need to use their common sense about this. We had the release of the first Xbox, and people were all over it, the price was somewhat reasonable. Now we have this new bulk from Microsoft that is, essentially, the same exact thing, but with better graphics. So why would people spend 400 smackers on a graphical update? The answer presently escapes me.

Those of us who are interested in gaming have now witnessed the start of the "Next Gen Console Race," and the question, as was in 2000, is obvious -- which is the best choice? Certainly not the 360, I would say. There have been articles among articles stating the same things, and here's a summary: The 360 is the same thing, PS3 has some promise, and Nintendo's Revolution will probably live up to its (code) name. My obvious choice would be the third, as Nintendo seems to be the only company that still has a workers and heads with souls, who don't pump out the same things over and over with escalating prices. Face it -- would you rather buy a $200 system (possibly less) that can change everything and provide a fresh experience and that can play Nintendo games back from the days of the NES, or a prettier version of what we've seen countless times over? I'll say it again -- people need to think a bit more. Surf around, read the countless articles on the internet, and inform yourself before you blow $400+ on the same ol' same ol'.
