Rating: - A nostalgic handheld
The classic NES edition Game Boy Advance SP came about during the early days of the GBA SP redesign. The first two official colors (released in US) having been platinum and cobalt blue, NES edition gave us something besides just another color in the Game Boy hand held library to look at. It came with a concept, an idea that many gamers of today could be gamers from the early days in video gaming as well. And so when this unique unit hit store shelves, Nintendo had also re-released classic 8-bit titles like the original Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda along side it. Initially I had been skeptical of owning another Game Boy Advance SP model largely because I owned the platinum unit already. These tiny Game Boy's also came at a not so tiny list price of 100.00$ US back in the hey day! But having been one of the lucky kids of the 80's who had had the honor of playing the old NES, the nostalgia became too compelling. This SP is just your average SP model but it's appeal to me is psycological. I have a feeling that anyone else buying this version will feel the same way too. But if your not old school Nintendo like myself you might find another version you like better. They all play and behave the same afterall. If your new to the Game Boy Advance SP or are bored and want to read anyways, well I have taken the liberty to evaluate the GBA SP and present to you my rather lengthy personal observations. So here we go...
...Game Boy Advance games showed up brighter than ever, and the tiny 2 inch LCD screen (despite being slightly smaller than the older Game Boy Advance model) had maintained a well proportioned picture. Text heavy titles were not a problem to read. Really the NES Edition GBA SP is like any ordinary copy of the early SP models which had front lights installed and were scaled down in size. So the real draw back was that after my initial wave of nostalgia had left me, there was really nothing left to separate this equipment from the others. The slim design meant less weight than an original GBA. Visibility had improved some thanks to the front lights but still had some draw backs. One of the major flaws in the front light design is that direct sunlight is STILL an issue causing a glare effect, making visibility outside or any place in particular that is too bright a problem. You could just turn off the front light but even so, the sun will still create a glare that hinders more than helps. For optimal results, you will need to be in doors or under the shade. These early GBA SP's (NES Edition included) were made to improve quality of vision in the house where there is a minimum of light. It's not going to make any big difference really as this is still an improvement over what we had before, but I though you should at least know about it. All the new look SP's offer a closable LCD screen much like your traditional laptop computer. This allows the unit to become a little more compact fitting into most small pockets. The buttons were redesigned and are depressed lower into the face of the unit so as to allow the LCD screen to shut all the way. So those people who had gotten used to the bubble shaped buttons of the old GBA's might have to spend time getting used to the new feel. Consequently, a smaller design meant that the shoulder buttons (the R and L buttons) were also fixed to match the system's smallish frame. Anyone with large hands might experience slight discomfort playing an SP for an extended period due to having to scrunch their hands to handle the unit. I personally always disliked the way they redesigned the start and select buttons in these SP models. They are very small and sit at a lower elevation than even the A and B buttons. So you either have to press them a little harder to get them to work, or have long finger nails. It's a minor gripe though really. All SP units utilize a lithium ion rechargable battery similar to the battery used in most cell phones. It charges off an AC adapter which ships with the system. The battery pack offers an improved and welcomed cost efficient approach that saves you from repeatedly spending on AA batteries. The system can ultimately be powered for up to 10 or so hours with the front lights off and maybe 8 hours or so with them on. Charge time can last up to 4 hours although you can still play while hooked to the AC adapter. Unfortunately there are no headphone jacks installed due to design limitations. This means you will have to invest in special headphone or ear peice equipment if you want to keep the game noise to yourself. It's just a minor set back that thankfully is cheap enough to solve. And really, the GBA SP can do pretty much anything else the original GBA can do. This means it still offers backward compatability with Game Boy and Game Boy Color game paks. It will also except all previous GBA peripherals like the E-reader accessory, and can also achieve Gamecube connectivity. So over all an SP is superior in every way to the original model Game Boy Advance except that it's physical design becomes a little more demanding in player's hands. The GBA SP is a valid purchase and a worthy replacement for the traditional Game Boy Advance.
As you can see, the NES Edition GBA SP is pretty much just your basic SP model. You might be wondering if that makes it any more viable a purchase than any other early version SP. Well I can say that it's appeal lies in it's retro appearance. It's pretty much a sentimental concept in reality. I will say that the material used to create the NES controller face on the button and D pad portion of this model, is different than the other SP units. It's a bit more course and doesn't scratch as easily. So that improves the overall quality ever so slightly but not enough to justify it as the sole reason to buy this version. If your not worried about the NES appeal then there are other colors or special edition versions out there. And if your more practical than sentimental then I actually recommend you look into the newer SP models featuring true back lighting rather than the front lights installed here. You may differentiate the newer SP's from the early ones by seeing the "now with brighter screen" phrase on the package. Optionally there is the Game Boy Micro as well.
Rating: - awsome edition system
i was lucky enough to get the last one of these at game stop and its great system. You will not regret to get one of these i have the japanese version of mario brothers and donkey kong for it its great fun. The top of the system kind of looks like the top of the NES its a great collectors item and you wont regret this machine. I also have the zelda edition of the DS there both really great systems. I like this one so much it doesnt leave the house if you have one i suggest you do the same. Get a regular color sp and leave this one at home i highly recommend it this one will be worth big money some day if in good shape
Rating: - USED!!!!!!!
I was actually lucky enough to find one of these USED, at Gamestop! I must say I was very excited to find one of these because I was getting tired of my old GBA because it had no backlight, so the GBA SP was really cool to get! This is definately a good buy, especially if you can't find anywhere to buy it.
Rating: - Awesome!
I recieved one of these for christmas a few years ago with 4 nes gba games. It's so awesome and it makes you feel like you're actualy playing a real nes.
Rating: - Must Buy!
First off, I didn't have an SP until this was released. I don't know, but is just didn't interest me very much. I always had respect the SP, as I already knew it was a great and worthy addition into the Gameboy line. However, nothing about it grabbed me, until they released this version. Thie version stands out realyy well, and it's really worth the money. I love it.
THe most obvoius is the lush finish. The SP classic NES paintjob stands out as it is totally sexy (no, not in that certain way), it's just so coool looking. I have a knack for sleek, shiny, or sexy (again, not in that way) electronics, and this one really stands out and can compete with the DS Lite easily. The fold down SP just rules, as the SP's backlight does the job and the fold down always means that the finish will
still look great. The SP still has staying power, as for some reason, 2D graphics are sometimes interesting. Don't asl why though.
So Basically, this finish is a must, and this might just reconsider your buying descision on the SP that you said "meh" over when it first came out. It's a refreshing color over all the generic dayglow and that ridicolous orange-green color they released. (for the review on the SP itself, just check out my SP reviefw on the red version. I just think that I need to talk anout this wonderful color they released for gamers such as I).
