Editorial Review:

Description:
Columbia recording artist and Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters toured the United States for the first time in 12 years in 1999-2000 with his highly acclaimed "In The Flesh" show that presented, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Waters's music including: early Pink Floyd material; classic compositions from his masterpieces "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon;" less well-known pieces from "Animals," "Wish You Were Here," and "The Final Cut;" songs from the solo tour de force "Amused To Death" and "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking;" and the debut of a new song, "Each Small Candle." Songs: In the Flesh, The Happiest Days of Our Lives, Another Brick in the Wall Part 2, Mother, Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert, Southampton Dock, Pigs on the Wing Part 1, Dogs, Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-8), Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Breathe (In The Air), Time, Money, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking Part 11 (5:06 am? Every Stranger's Eyes), Perfect Sense (Parts I and II), The Bravery of Being Out of Range, It's a Miracle, Amused to Death, Brain Damage, Eclipse, Comfortably Numb, Each Small Candle.

Amazon.com:
Recorded on a single night in June 2000, In the Flesh: Live is a thrilling live testament to the strength of Roger Waters's peculiar artistic vision. Backed by a crack ensemble of both fresh and seasoned players, the former Pink Floyd songsmith powers through Floyd classics, underserved relics, and highlights from his spotty solo career. The man is in great shape, physically and musically, and he obviously has a blast playing live.

What of the axe work? Accept the fact that Waters and Floyd guitarist David Gilmour no longer play together, and you'll appreciate stand-ins Snowy White and Doyle Bramhall II--and the degree to which they honor the parts and solos immortalized by Gilmour. (See the lavish but impersonal Pulse for a healthy dose of Gilmour's Floyd.) The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix is massive, presenting both the music's inherent spaciousness and the favorable acoustics in Portland, Oregon's Rose Garden Arena. The DVD's 18-minute documentary is long on downtime and short on musical interplay. Any way you cut it, though, this is a must for Floyd fans and a real treat for lovers of arty, intelligent rock. --Michael Mikesell

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Get it!
This DVD is better than I expected. I was at this concert at the Gorge and it was the same show! Even my friends that are not fans watched it intensly. I recommend having the closed caption on so you can follow all the words.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Pink Floyd Owns.......
This is one of the best DVDs I have ever watched, Roger Waters IS Pink Floyd, he wrote 95% of there lyrics. I liked Pulse from David Gilmour but this DVD is as good if not better, Roger plays songs that Gilmour wont, Dogs, Welcome to the Machine, Set the controls for the Heart of the Sun....damn.......great songs. Gilmour wont touch these songs. oh well, great DVD highly recommended.....

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Roger Waters - 'In The Flesh - Live' (Sony) 4 1/2 stars
Review no. 237. Main reason I'm giving this 24 song concert DVD a four-and-a-half star rating instead of a five star one is simply because a Roger Waters live performance may just be impossible to capture on film. 'In The Flesh - Live' was recorded in Portland in July, 2000 - about year after I saw him play. Some commented that his show was merely an elaborate slide show just trying to ca$h in on the Pink Floyd name. I, for one really enjoyed (being able to add) the Floyd founder / former bassist to my concert roster. Although I've never gotten too much into his solo material, I felt that Waters had more than the right to get out there on the road to play to eager fans wanting to catch him on tour. Tunes I liked best were "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2", the memorable "Dogs", "Welcome To My Machine", the Floyd gem "Set The Controls To The Heart of The Sun" (alright - off Floyd's 2nd lp), the mesmerizing "Breathe (In The Air)", "Brain Damage" and the FM radio staple "Comfortably Numb". Recommended.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Creditable covers of Pink Floyd standards
At nearly 2.5 hours, this concert DVD is an incredible bargain -- the equivalent of two CDs for less than the price of one. If you're an old Pink Floyd fan like me, you'll enjoy Waters' rendition of classic cuts from The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, and other PF epics, interwoven with a sprinkling of material from Waters' post-PF career. As other reviewers have noted, the visuals are pretty lame, but the music is great, and that's what counts, at least for me. If half-star ratings were allowed on Amazon I'd go with the consensus of 4.5 stars. Definitely a bargain at the price, though!
