All Gothic games are exceptional. I have never played a game that I enjoyed more. I have played this game through several times and I never get tired of it. I love a game where you can go your own way and this is that game.
Rating: - Gothic: First in the PB series
There's a walkthrough on the net, and I highly recommend it to start you off right. Read the Story of Gothic first so you have a better idea of who you are as "Noname", and then practice the controls in the walkthrough a lot before you leave the path through the mines. I preferred the "alternate" WASD keybd setting, plus I enabled RControl to share the "action" of LControl. Gothic is the start of what I consider to be the best PC game series ever written. You will follow the quests of Noname through Gothic 2, Gothic 2: NOTR, Gothic 3, and the soon to be released Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods, which will take us to Gothic 4 which is about a year away. Believe me, it will take you a year to do this, but you will enjoy every minute.
Rating: - I want to like this game, but the controls are killing me
Graphically this game is similar to "Morrowind" and in many respects, I would presume if you like "Morrowind" but want a story and purpose to your RPG this might work for you. It's certainly not a bad game, but it's trying.
The issue in "Gothic" is the incredibly bad impute control system. Although the Keyboard buttons are "editable" all controls on this game require two buttons simultaneously. Now, I ask, did the people that designed the game actually ever try to play it???
Here's the thing, do you want to pick something up, pres "f" hold then "w". Do you want to fight? Press "left" then either "q,w,e,a,s, or d" Yes, swinging your sword must be done by moving your character which will quite often result in you running headfirst into the enemy and dying.
I just died because I couldn't figure out which two buttons allowed me to climb "down" a ladder. Talk about frustrating!!! All I want is a simpler interface to make this a good, solid game.
As it is, "Gothic" is a nice-looking, good-sounding, expansive RPG in which your choices matter and you have lots of quest to complete, but there's no AutoSave and the controls are not customizable enough. That sucks, it had potential.

This is one of the best games I have played. I have played it many times.
Rating: - Gothic is awesome
Have you ever taken a chance on a bargin bin game and come up with a treasure? Well, that's what happened to me. This game is amazing. The reviews just don't do it justice. The story is interesting and they do an excellent job of staying away from cut scenes (which I think mostly destroy the immersion factor) to tell it. It is like a real world you are exploring. There are no boundries except for the Barrier that keeps you all in. The only thing stopping you from going everywhere right off is critters you can't kill yet before they kill you. People complain about the combat, but I think it is rather realistic. It takes a bit of time to switch from your sword to bow and back. Melee is about timing and watching what your opponent is doing. It takes skill, not just the character's but also yours.
There's just too much to say about this amazing game. Just get it. You won't be sorry.
