Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Tom's music speaks to my soul!
I've been a huge fan of Tom's music for a number of years now! This album is one of my favorites - but it's so hard to choose between so much truly incredible work...

"Blue Highway" will always be my song on this album - it so deeply touches my soul... But depending upon my mood, I may feel "If I Fell From Grace With You", "The Crying Ground" or "Bigger Than Both Of Us". And other times, I'm all about "That's What I Love About The Rain", "Poetic Justice" or "Trip Of Love".

There's not a bad song on the album!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - And he rocks
I have heard few musicians who are so deeply true as Tom Kimmel. The man has a big heart, and his music reflects that. He's an artist in the deepest sense.

And he rocks.

"Bones": Tom pares down to bones, after his stint with a rock band and a big label .

"Short Stories": A peak... Calling on friends such as Emmylou Harris, Jerry Douglas, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Jim Horn... Kimmel created his "mature artist" magnum opus. Intimate, yet big.

"Light of Day": This is Tom Kimmel, at home, in his own studio, recording his own songs, mostly solo. Superb, complete, elegant and satisfying. Tops.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - What happened to Tom Kimmel??
I loved the albums "5 to 1" and especially "Circle Back Home"!! Tom Kimmel was my hero back then. Is all his other new albums like this one? I was so disappointed with this one. His raspy voice is almost gone. There is no power left! The style is totally different from earlyer releases. This one reminds me of many of the 90s week pop albums. Avoid this one, and get instead "Circle Back Home" (that one deserves 5 stars)!!

After giving this one another chance, I actually really like the songs 1,2 and 6. They are beautiful! Today I would give this cd 3 stars.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Beautiful and haunting
I discovered Tom Kimmel when he played at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas -- he sang at my church, performing "That's What I Love About Rain." I was hooked from that moment on and had to have this album. I have listened to it over and over, and every song continues to speak to me. The melodies burrow themselves in your brain -- I can see why Tom's music has been covered by so many artists. There are many gems on this album -- the sad, wistful "Poetic Justice," the poignant "If I Fell from Grace With You," the upbeat "Tip of my Tongue" and "On to Something." "Trip on Love" is particularly guilty of becoming stuck in my head.

I recommend "Short Stories" very highly -- and on a side note, when I met Tom in Kerrville he was a great guy, so buying his records will help support not only a talented artist, but a genuinely nice guy as well.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Short Stories
Tom is a superb artist. He writes, records, Composes and performs both alone and with groups. He works with people from all walks of life--- the advantaged and the disavantaged alike. His music is relaxing, thoughtful, and somtimes haunting but always great. There is a message in each lyric.
I recommend his work highly.
