Rating: - Another amazing Batman title
Batman Returns is a brawler game for the SNES, much like Final Fight and Turtles in Time. You go through several stages beating up the bad guys. Some stages are 2D with minor platforming action. One stage is simulated 3D and lets you drive the Batmobile.
Two things make this game one of the best Batman titles ever released. Gameplay-wise, Batman has tons of moves to keep the fighting from getting boring. Besides your basic combo, there are jump kicks, a glide attack, and multiple grab attacks that let you bash heads together, slam bad guys into the ground, or smash them against objects and the background. Multiple enemy types, environmental hazards, and fun boss types keep the levels fresh.
Presentation wise, Konami went all-out with making the game feel like the movie. Graphics and design are accurate to Burton's unique visionary style, and almost all of Danny Elfman's hauntingly rich score has been captured on the SNES cart with amazing accuracy. Rendered shots of characters and scenes from the movie give the game that authenticity that we are only starting to get on a consistent basis with today's movie tie-in offerings. Plus tiny details (such as being able to duplicate Batman's encounter with the stun gun clown) make the game come to life.
The only thing missing is 2-player mode, which really wouldn't have fit with the movie's structure. Definitely sets a high standard for all Batman and movie tie-in games, and an essential piece of any Batman game collection.

Rating: - The Best of the Bats? (2)
Before I get started, let me put a guideline for how I use the stars. 5 means it's great or perfect, 4 means it's good but could be better, 3 means it has potential that it doesn't use but it's still a decent game, 2 means the game does nothing for me, and 1 means I hate the game with a passion.
That being said, let's get started. I never played the Sega CD or Game Gear versions of the game, so I can't judge those. I think the Super NES version is the best one I've played. It has nice tunes, fairly good Final-Fight(or Double Dragon)-style gameplay, tight controls, and the graphics aren't bad either. The game could have benefited from extras such as a playable Catwoman, but I'm not going further down that road in this review.
Unlike most of the other Batman games, this one actually contains music from its movie counterpart. I don't know if it's digital or midi, but it sounds good.
