Who would win in a fight: the Incredible Hulk or Wolverine? What if Street Fighter's Ryu teamed up with Hulk, and Chun Li had Wolverine's back? Speculate no more as Marvel pits its comic book heroes against Capcom's video game stars in Marvel vs. Capcom.

All your favorite Marvel characters are available, each one a joy to play. The Hulk is huge, powerful, and slow, while Spider-Man leaps and web-slings around the arena, attacking with outrageous handsprings, flips, and lunging punches. Capcom's familiar Street Fighter heroes, as well as a few other heroes such as Mega Man, round out the character selection. Some of the lesser-known characters from both franchises make special appearances. It's pretty funny when Arthur from the old game Ghosts N' Goblins jumps onscreen to throw lances at Captain America. Each of the battles is a two-on-two tag-team match. Players can swap characters in the middle of a fight, and clever players quickly discover how to launch devastating double-team attacks on the opponent. Up to four people can play.

If Marvel vs. Capcom has a fault, it's super speed. The action is fast--really fast--and can quickly overwhelm a player who is used to the feint-and-strike gameplay of more sophisticated 3-D fighting games. In fact, gamer novices may be able to beat video game veterans by resorting to the old "randomly mash every button as fast as you can" trick. Aside from this, the game is a triumph in 2-D fighting. --Mike Fehlauer

While this is the only good port to any of the Marvel vs. game prior to MVC2, this game still has a few problems in comparision to just playing a CPS2 ROM.


First off, the sound is god awful. Everything from this game sounds like it's coming from a small FM Radio with nearly dead batteries from the other end of a long tunnel. It's that bad. Not to mention that there are a few sound glitches where some of the sound effects don't even play for a few moments. So, for example, you periodically won't hear Ryu yell, "Hadoken" for a short period of time. But the sound doesn't make the game, the controls do. And that's my next gripe.

Unless you are on an Aracde Stick, you'll have a harder time playing this game then you would on a keyboard. Not only does this game not support the analog stick, but the control pad isn't very responsive at all. And no, it's not the controller. I've played KOF 98 and 99, Street Fighter 3: Double Impact, and Soul Calibur 1 all on the same controller. And I haven't had nearly as many problems with the controls on those games as I've had here. Not to mention, you have shoulder buttons for the FP and FK. In MVC2, you won't mind shoulder buttons because that game has a 4 button layout with FP and FK used almost souly for calling the helpers. MVC1 still has the 6 button layout as its other Capcom brothers. Meaning a standard Dreamcast controller isn't very suitable for a fast paced game such as this. Every nanosecond counts in this game and you can't have sluggish shoulder buttons slowing you down. Street Fighter 3 and Alpha can get away with it, but not this game. In short, get a Mad Catz Dreampad or some sort of Aracde Stick if you're going to get this game.

Single player also gets rather dull pretty quickly. This game is meant for competition as far as I'm concerned. Casual players will enjoy this game, but the computer is either very easy or very hard and there isn't much middle ground.


On the plus end, the game itself is completely intact from the CPS2 version. And it even has the added Onslaught Mode after you unlock all the hidden fighters. It also has a 4 player tag battle mode as well. And that is probably the main reason to get this game. I, myself, play 4 player tag battle with MAME on Kaillera all the time and I have a blast. But for those of you that don't believe in emulation and have 3 friends around, this is just as good.

All in all, this is one of those party games that's good for playing at an Anime/Video Game convention, for instance. And while most people sing praises about MVC2, MVC1 is a very solid and competitive game. The characters are quite unbalanced. But it doesn't seem to hinder the game in the least bit. Sans the small rooster of characters, this can be considered supieror to MVC2 in certain ways. Pick it up if you have some friends around. You'll have a blast.


Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - You can use ONSLAUGHT as a selectable character
There are secret ways to unlock alternate versions of some of the characters, and even unlock Onslaught. You'll have to beat the game using certain techniques. In order to beat the game very easily, I personally found it best to use Ryu and Venom on Easy mode. Use them to beat the game multiple times and you'll be able to unlock all of the secret characters.

PROS:
1) The vibration feedback is extremely sensitive !!! You feel every bump and hit that you give your opponent.
2) There is an Easy mode, which strangely is not in MvC part 2. The Easy mode allows you to use Chun Li's lighting fast kicks.
3) There are a few super moves that are not in MvC part 2. Like Chun Li's has four supers in this game, while she has only three in part 2.

CONS:
1) There is a little slow-down with a few characters like War Machine and Strider. These characters move a lot faster in MvC part 2.
2) You can not select the same person twice. In MvC part 2, you are allowed to select the same person so you may have a team of three Akumas or whomever else.

Overall, it's a great game, and I urge you to buy it even if you already own MvC part 2. I own both games and love them equally.

Ok, who would pass up an oppertunaty like this, unless of course you have the chance to buy the 2nd one, better, but yet not as valuable as the first, considering they DON'T MAKE THE FIRST MARVEL VS. CAPCOM ANY MORE! This game has crisp anamation, smooth gameplay, CRISTAL CLEAR sound and an awsome soundtrack that pumps you up and gets you in the mood for fighting(In the game anyway). Don't Pass up this golden oppertunity, get it if you can find it! First one also available for the Sony Playstation, and 2nd one also for the Sega DreamCast and Sony Playstation 2, and soon for Microsoft X-Box, and Nintendo Gamecube!

Ok, they did include a few of them, but only as helpers, if they made them as default playable characters, this game would have been way more awesome than it already is, and that would totaly rule!)

Gameplay:
The gameplay is based on how fast and fun the game has, and how much slowdown the game experiences during play.
The gameplay is lighting fast with absolutly no slowdown when I play it unless it is so little and the game is so fast paced that it's not noticeable, and that just makes the game even better. The game is also ultimate fun especially with playing with the younger kids, because the look on their face is priceless and hillarios when you pull off a huge combo with a great character, like Mega-Man for example.

SOUND:
Sound score is based upon voice overs, SFX, and music.
The music 1st of all is awesome, they use origonal music from origonal games, it starts off with the P1's 1st Character music, like if P1's 1st character is Mega-Man, then it starts off with Mega-Mans Music Used in the game, then after a character is killed the next character to pop up has his/her music played, like if Mega-Man is K.O.ed then the 2nd characters music for that team plays. The SFX rule, they are so good, thats all there is to say. The voice overs are perfect in every way and couldn't be any more precice to the characters.

GRAPHICS: The graphics in this game are so beautiful and unbelievably awesome looking, that you can't even believe why they didn't do this in the earlier vs. games. If the graphics look this good on the 1st for Dreamcast then they have to look way better on the 2nd for the Dreamcast, and they do. I definetly have to give the graphics.

OVERALL: This is not an average, this is what I think about the whole game, as a...whole game, anyway.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The arcade perfect version of Marvel VS Capcom !
I said it before and I'll say it again in a different way. I'm a 2D fighting veteran and I know which 2D fighter is worth playing all over again and which is worth ditching. However, the PlayStation version of Marvel VS Capcom is just one of those games that needs to be ditched, except for the Dreamcast conversion. Unlike its unworthy PlayStation apprentice, the Dreamcast version of Marvel VS Capcom is 100% arcade perfect in every way ! Allow me to give the lowdown on this game ! The graphics are far by, the best I've seen. Although they seem a bit dated to some people who never played or doubt the VS series, the animation is seamless, with no frames chopped off. The characters look brighter and they move much faster and smoother than that of the arcade version. Including the backgrounds which looks very colorful, but some of them looks like they're featured in an enhanced 16-bit game. But despite of that, the Dreamcast's power is capable of making 2D fighters look better than any other 2D fighters on different home consoles. The sound still remains the same as the arcade and PSX original. The music sounds fairly catchy, but could've been better if Q-Sound hadn't made the music too loud and too flashy to bother even the most patient person in the house. As for the sound effects, almost as similar to that of the earlier VS series, but much improved. You'll still hear a whole lot of the same punching noises and the same hits taken from a super beam or a flame toasted fist. And for the voice acting, the same again, but the only voice that changed, was Ryu's. His character sprite may be based on the original Street Fighter Alpha character, but Capcom designed him to give him his old red headband he had while he was growing older, and make his voice sound a little deeper. As for the gameplay, very well done. The PSX controls didn't do much of the justice but the design of the Dreamcast control fits the gameplay very well. With the DC controller, Marvel VS Capcom plays like a charm ! Yes my friends...it's that good ! And plus, you get the tag feature, where you can switch your characters anytime you want, especially when your first character is losing energy. And as for the game modes, you get five of them, which should be enough to please you. You still get the Arcade mode, along with the 2 player VS mode, Survival mode, Cross Fever mode, and Training mode. As for the selection of characters, it's okay...I guess. You get characters from the Marvel universe from the US and the Capcom universe from Japan. On the Capcom side we've got Ryu, Chun-Li, Zangief, Mega Man, Strider Hiryu, Jin, Morrigan, Captain Commando, and Roll (as a secret character). On the Marvel Comics side we've got Wolverine, Spider-Man, Venom, Gambit, Hulk, and War Machine. The Marvel side does have its share of secret characters, but all of them are alternatives of the same character. But still, while the DC conversion has some flaws, it's still arcade perfect and furthermore, it has no loading times. Marvel VS Capcom for the Dreamcast is one game that shouldn't be left behind. I know what you're saying. I didn't really explain that much detail on the PlayStation version. But the reason why, is because its hard to explain complete details about a horrible port of a true Capcom classic. The DC version was simple to explain, because it defined arcade perfect with a vengeance ! Like I said, if you want the true Marvel VS Capcom experience, play the arcade version or just play this one ! You'll be proud you did !
