Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - PC version is better
Hexen is a brilliant game, but its N64 transfer is not.

In fact, the only thing praise worthy of the N64 conversion is the nice little paragraphs you get when traveling from one level to another. These little descriptions of where your going are not available in the PC version.

Otherwise, Hexen 64 is a terrible mock up of what is a brilliant game on PCs today. Yes its dated, but many people have taken the source code and made it a much more enjoyable experience with better controls, lighting effects, and so on.

The only reason you should buy this, as far as Hexen fans are concerned, is the ease of having a multiplayer match.

If you've never played Hexen before, buy the PC version, go to http://www.doomsdayhq.com/ and download the source port there that allows smoother graphics, 3D model support, lighting effects, and more. This is the Hexen we die-hards know and love

In fact, you should also look into http://www.korax-heritage.com/kmod/faq.php for the single greatest Hexen MOD there is. It really takes the game to a whole new level.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - SOMEWHAT BORING AND KINDA STALE 5.75 OUT OF 10
Hexen looks and plays almost identically to Doom except it's not as fun and it uses ancient weaponry and magic instead of guns. This game could've been deamed a classic, but unfortunately boredom mars the experience. Yes, you will find yourself bored and confused as to what you're supposed to do. The enemy designs look pretty cool, but the level designs are bland and uneventful. Speaking of enemies, they're pretty stupid... and I play the game on Archimage the hardest difficulty. Your missions are not very exciting along with the use of your weapons and magic, so you'll never feel like you rule all when you do with your powers as you feel in the Xbox 360 masterpiece Bioshock. Just go play Doom instead, unless you're looking for a Doom ripoff(If so, please avoid Zero Tolerance).

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A classic, yes... but...
Short and simple. Playing this game reminded me of the first games to come out when we crawled out of DOS and jumped into WinDoze. A decent enough first-person shooter - but the graphics are bad enough that I haven't played it ages. What a waste for a 64 bit machine.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - 2 and a half stars
I really wanted to like Hexen 64. It's like a fantasy version of doom, and the storyline and atmosphere are damn good. You can play as a weak but magically powerful mage, a strong but magically weak fighter, or a balanced cleric. But this game has waaayyy too many problems. I didnt' even experience the jumping bug in the editorial review either. The first couple levels, i was hooked. It reminded me of warcraft II: trying to save your homeland from impending doom by ringing the bell and such was awesome. And the fact that the enemies teleport in only adds to the gameplay, as you never know whether you've cleared an area or not. The items are cool, and the mazelike and puzzle aspects woulld've been where it really shined, had they been done right.
unfortunately, not the case. Firstly, the horrible graphics reminded me of jurassic park on snes, as the entirely identical backgrounds provided with not-so-great maps caused me to get lost over and over again, thus killing the mood. Also, in the 4th level or so and on, you hit a switch, and it could open something up on a random spot in ANOTHER LEVEL. This caused me to give up, as i have no interest in searching a level over and over for some obscure doorway or whatever. Also, when i cheated to find the later levels wikthout said searching, i found the end-game bosses to be clones of the you!!! this is just lame imo, they couldn't even be bothered to make up cool end-game bosses? Also, jumping sucks ass in this game, so save often.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - pre turok in my mind but not as good a solid 3 stars because it is harder than turok
i use 2 love playing this freaking game on a fridy or saturday night when i had finish all my chores with nothing else to do in the days of 97 and 98 i was on this game i especially enjoy playing this game on halloween because this game is kind of reminds me of halloween because at times it can b scary it depends on how u feel da game is da graphics of da game is average but i like it da way it is clear but when da monsters gets close n ur it looks that much better and when u kill them blood comes out 2 make for realistic action that was something rare at da time of video game creating like when mario killed his evil enemies u would no c da blood come out of their body this game has dat this game is also extremely violent at times meaning u have 2 kill more people and they don't give u a chance 2 do that because it is too many of da enemies beatin u up like u steal their girlfriend i enjoy each of da levels each thought i didn't successfully make it 2 da last level of da game i had 2 get through cheat code connections 2 make da last level of da game happen but this game took me on quite an adventure when playin it as u each level of da game it gets dat much harder u have 2 unlock doors find keys 2 get another level most of da time while finding da key may seem impossible it is still a find game 2 play and i encourage others 2 play this game Joe Brown
