Rating: - If you choose just one children's first Bible, this is it!
DK's "My Very First Bible (My Very First Books)" (2005) is an outstanding children's first Bible. Why?
Let me count the ways:
1. The selection of stories (14 from the Old Testament and 12 from the New Testament) are age-appropriate and simply written for the age 4-8 audience. There is nothing difficult that the parent will need to explain.
Each story is two to six pages in length with illustrations filling half of the space.
2. The illustrations are nothing but fabulous--softened, intense in color but muted, and very engaging. Diana Mayo did an incredible job.
3. People in the Bible are presented with skin and hair coloring, dress and customs appropriate to the Middle East. (I cringe every time I see Mary as a redhead with blue eyes.)
4. No heavy theology for such a young age.
Example: "The Good Samaritan"--"Jesus told this parable to show how we should love and care for people, whoever they are." At the conclusion of the story, this Bible phrase speaks gently but emphatically: "Love your neighbor as you love yourself"--Luke 10.
Example" "The Lost Son"--"to show that even when people do bad things, they can show how sorry they are and be forgiven." And the Bible scripture: "For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found"--Luke 15. The thorny problem of the jealous brother is left out.
I know one little girl who will receive this first Bible at Christmas. And I know one great-aunt who will have it memorized not long after.
Rating: - Discovering the Bible Stories for the First Time
My Very First Bible retells the classic stories from the Old and New Testaments. These stories are for preschool aged children who are being introduced to the stories of Creation, Noah's Ark, Baby Moses, Jonah and the Whale and The Easter Story.
Diana Mayo has illustrated more than 30 books and she has created full pages filled with beautiful art that will spark the imagination of young children. Since children do tend to read books over and over again, this book will be remembered long after your child is reading a Bible without pictures. I still love the children's Bibles because they are such fun to read and even adults love illustrated Bibles.
